Does RedHat have any kind of "Location" setting?

I have my laptop set up perfectly for the home lan, however if I connect to work I have to change all the network settings around.

Is there an option in RH where I can set my location and it will set the network, etc to that location. (Mac users will know what I'm talking about ;)

if there is one I don't know of it.
what I'd do is I'd write a script and put it in the start up so it asked me where I was and then set the network settings based on that. I presume you don't mind it being interactive?

Not sure what you mean exactly Hobbes. Like a few different profiles each containing different settings and at connection time you could choose which profile to use?
AFAIK you can use wvdial and set up a few diff configs.. not too sure as I haven't used it in a while but it's something to look into.

wvdial is for ppp isn't it logic?

if I read that correctly Hobbes is on a network at home and in work so it's just his LAN settings he needs to change.

I don't believe it does, deRanged is most likely correct, last time we just wrote a script to ask for ip and default gateway when we needed to do stuff like that..

must actually write one for meself cause i need to do so moving between home and work, and using netcfg all the time is just getting annoyin..

You are correct Ronin, I am having that exact same problem.

I have to load up NetCFG and cut and paste IP addresses into it to get it to work.

Can someone point me to where I can pick up the specs on NetCFG? (I know I'm probably asking stupid questions).

Doesn't seem to like switching between fixed IP and DHCP (probably me doing something wrong) so I set up a fixed IP for the office as well and it works like a dream.

Put a shortcut link into KDE panel so it now even looks like the locaton manager on a mac. biggrin.gif

so do you restart your network based on your location choice after you boot up and log in?

You set up locations in the switchto.conf file and put your settings in there.

After that I just select one of those settings, for example "Home" and it reconfigures netcfg so it will work at home.

When I go to the office I just click on the switch to office (I have it in a menu button now) and it switches it to work on the office.

I don't have to reboot at all and I only have to switch if my location moves.

    [updated]

Actually it seems to mess up the settings on reboot, however I just modified my script to get it to run the correct location on startup.
