Digital Voice Recorder

Does anyone have any experience with using a digital voice recorder as an actual dictating machine (as opposed to recording concerts etc). Ideally I would like to be able to record notes, minutes of meetings etc and email them back to the office for typing. There seems to be plenty of Digital Voice Recorders available on the market but I am wondering how easy the software is on the PC end. Is there any software? With a traditional tape based dictation the typist has jog back and slow play features to make it easier to get the spoken word - is there software to do this with digital files or are you just using your favourite MP3 player on the PC?

Also, any ideas on a dedicated voice recorder versus using an add on on my iPod?

    Thanks
