    Hello All,

Rick will be back on these shores this October teaching Kata bungai and Kyusho through his own style Ao Denkou Jitsu.
    What is Ao Denkou Jitsu?

Ao Denkou Jitsu was chosen to describe the style of martial arts that Professor Rick Clark teaches. Ao Denkou Kai, the organization, was formed to formalize, promote and expand ADJ. Ao Denkou is translatable as "Blue Lightning" hence the full name "Ao Denkou Jitsu" describes "Blue Lightning Techniques" or "Blue Lightning Method". There are a variety of meanings behind the name; an obvious choice for the lightning portion is the sensations caused by the kyusho or Pressure Points that brought many of us to Professor Clark.
Prof. Clark has been on the forefront of promoting Kyusho-Jitsu and Bunkai, first publishing on this subject in the June 1989 issue of Inside Kareate the article What is the Purpose of Kata? Prof. Clark has published articles nationally and internationally on the topic of Pressure Points, Vital Points, Kyusho-jitsu, and Bunkai. Along with a few other pioneers Prof. Clark has played a significant role in the revitalization of this aspect of the martial arts.

He currently holds the following ranks:
    8th Dan Ryukyu Kempo
7th Dan Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan
    7th Dan Ju-jitsu
    5th Dan Judo
    3rd Dan Modern Arnis
    1st Dan Hapkido

Due to the reception of his seminars around the world Prof. Clark heads an organization that has a membership as diverse as his own background. Ao Denkou Kai has members from all over the world:

    United States
United Kingdom (Scotland, England, and Wales)
    Republic of Ireland
    Norway
    Australia
    New Zealand
    Japan
    Sweden
    Belgium
    Finland
    Holland
    Germany
The styles represented by ADK members are as diverse, there are members who practice Uechi-ryu, Isshin-ryu, Taiji Quan, Krav Maga, Shotokan, Tae Kwon Do, Shorin-ryu, ****o-ryu, Seisan-ryu, Ju Jitsu and many others. In addition, Prof. Clark is a strong advocate of cross-training in multiple styles after achieving the core in a primary style, as the membership reflects.

Prof. Clark continues to travel the world teaching seminars promoting Kyusho-jitsu and Bunkai for martial artists of all styles and systems. If you are interested in hosting Prof. Clark for a seminar or attending a seminar please go to http://www.ao-denkou-kai.org/seminars.htm or click on the "Seminars" button on this web site.

I will be hosting at least 2 seminars in Cork city.

If anyone would like to attend these seminars or even host Rick themselves! Please contact me so that I can keep you informed of developments.

from which university did he receive his professorship?

    From Ricks site:
Prof. Clark is qualified as an expert witness in the United States Federal Court on issues of Police Use of Force. In addition to Prof. Clark's martial arts expertise he has his undergraduate and graduate degree in Criminology. Prof. Clark is a member of the American Society for Law Enforcement Training and has been involved in the training of police officers at the Local, State, and Federal level.

He got this at Indiana State University http://www.indstate.edu/home_flash.html . Where he also used to teach a martial arts class. But because his touring callander has increased so much he has had to hand the class over to one of his students and supports them as much as he can.

Cool, good for him. Though a American university professorship isn't exactly the same thing as an Irish/Uk one.

Oh right! Text can be hard to get a question across sometimes :D

Ya, Kano was teaching at the University that he talked the dean into letting Judo be on the physical activities program. Much which was really pushed by a European (German man I think? I can't remember his name now?) who was also teaching at the university, and noticed that the students were liveless and lazy due to over working the books. So he set about installing the european university activity model and went looking for activities that would be appealing to the Japanese and found Ju Jitsu and Judo. The martial arts had been dropped by the Japanese after WWII, because they thought that the Europeans would thnik that they were barbaric.

I think that Kempo use the Prof title?

But in Rick's case he is really a Prof. and uses that professional title instead of Master or GrandMaster. I think he specialised in Criminology?

    Right then!

We had two evenings of sessions with Prof. Clark.

On Tue 11th we ran a Free Womens Self Defence Class, which was covered by the Cork newspaper "The Echo". (It was in last nights paper!!)

Then we covered kata/form applications and control/restraint techs from Heian 2 that can be crossed referenced with Won Hyo.

Wed 12th we continued on the previous nights work while also looking at Tekki or Naihanchi, which can also be cross referenced with Po Eun. Also Prof. Clark started a discussion on the right to defend yourself or your family in Ireland and the UK and this lead into a great conversation which ended up in a conversation about Chung Do Kwan TKD being older Shotokan than the JKA Shotokan!!!

A good (sore) time has had by all and we look forward to Prof.Clarks return around April 2006.

This is a link to pics from the second night....

Good to see he could get there though!

Nice to see Rick hurting so many young men again ;) Arm and wrist locks were already sore before the PP thing made it worse! Any idea what issue of the paper we should keep an eye out for?
