ok my pc had ticking been along until

my search utility crashes everytime i use it and when i end the process via task manager the cpu performance goes up to 100% and stays there so i have to restart

avg antivirus is not working keeps telling me that the virus defs are out of date and when i update them online i can see the new definitions being downloaded but then nothing after they're downloaded the avg symbol remains in black and white and just keeps saying virus defs out of date now when i try to update its says no new updates available
have reinstalled it but no joy?

    anybody know

other than these two annoying things my pc seems to b running well

    1. What is the search utility you are using?

    2. Contact the vendor for vendor suppor, or google it online and see if you can come up with any solutions. Pershaps this is an existing prob with your AV.

    3. It's possible you have a load of spyware on your PC. My AV stopped working until I got rid of some spyware.

    just the windows search utility

ran adaware and reg fixer and use sygate firewall all the time
so my spyware should nt be too bad
looks like something has prevented avg from placing those updated files in the right folder

Have a look at your hosts file. Its in your Windows system folder, \system32\drivers\etc simply called hosts no extension. If it has a bunch of entries for anti-virus software with localhost addresses, you've been visited by a trojan virus. Using Notepad, delete them, just leaving the localhost single entry and reboot. You should then be able to run AVG. But no promises. Sometimes these things burrow into the Registry and can be hard to shake. You may have to back up your data and re-install new Windows.
