Headset Problems

can someone tell me why my crappy headset has two different connections? i'm assuming ones for the mic, and ones for the earphones, but one connection is smaller then the other. heres a pic http://www.multicom.fr/ma35.html

One of them is for the mic and one for the earphones afaik, the mic should be the bigger one.
