as a thread virgin and considering i'm aobut a 22 hr flight from home i figured i'd put this under the lost section.
I have a stop over in hong kong in a few weeks, im only there for about 10 hours but i figured i'd go in and have a look around the city while im there.
has anyone any idea where would be the best place to go? otherwise ive a feeling that i'll end up somewhere as exciting as capel street.

Why did you feel the need to post this in a forum about the television series, 'LOST'.
Mayhaps you should try the travel forum? Or would that actually make some sense?

10 hours isn't really much time to see Hong Kong (My favourite city in the whole world). I would go up Victoria peak on the tram and take a ride on the star ferry. If you have any time left, check out the markets in Sham Shui Po in Kowloon.

have to agree with darren, brilliant city. Victoria peak is a must - get the airport express to HK island (26 minutes exactly ) return ticket is 18 euro. from there get a taxi for 2 euro to the tram and bring a camera. After that I'd just walk around this the most densely packed place on the planet.
I'd also goto Wan Chai for one of two reasons (maybe a third reason darren?lol) and either go to the bank of china towers observation platform or go for a few drinks, the place is going 24 hours a day.

Just to endorse what the guys said...

Airport Express to Hong Kong Station and pop the head up in Central. Have a look at the Legislative Council building, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building (take the escalator up inside), Bank of China building (I didn't know there was an observation platform there - thanks for the tip x.x.x, I'll be there in August myself)...

There are some interesting streets up the hill, away from the harbour in Central - very Cantonese in feel.

Then take a Star Ferry from Central to Kowloon (Tsimshatsui) and walk up along the waterfront a short distance. Just sit and admire the most spectacular skyline in the world. There is good shopping in Kowloon too (though stay away from any electronics shop that isn't called "Fortress") - Harbour City by the Star Ferry terminal is pretty huge.

It can be very hot and humid in HK, by the way. So you might want a fresh set of clothes when you get back to the airport.

    Pure pleasure :D

I used to live close by and visited HK many times for business, recreation and transit to other places. Loved it from the first moment I set foot in the place.

So I'm going back for two weeks to recharge the batteries and to see what's been happening.

Any tips on electrical shopping in HK? Will be there for 3 days in Dec/Jan 06. Has anyone ever been for new years eve as we arrive on Dec 31st. Also whats the best way to get from the airport? Thanks in advance.

Best way from the airport is definitely the Airport Express. That's a train that will take you right from the airport terminal to a station in either Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. From there, you can pick up a free bus to many hotels. On the way back, you can even check in at the train station - very convenient to abandon your luggage before getting on the train.

For electronics (or did you mean electrical?), I like Fortress, a chain of shops all over HK. I once spent half-an-hour in an independent shop haggling the guy down on a camera. After I left with the camera, I found I could have got the same price without effort in Fortress.

Not only do they have good prices, last time I bought a digital camera there, I got a decent tripod and a higher capacity memory card thrown in without asking.

For computer components, it's a little different. People recommend Mongkok for that. If you are tight on time, there is (or there was last time I was there) a good collection of component shops in Star City, beside the Star Ferry terminal in Tsimshatsui.

Whatever you do, don't go near any non-Fortress consumer electronics retailers in Tsimshatsui. They are renowned for cheating their customers (like putting a cheaper camera in your bag than you thought you were buying).

Thanks for the info. I'm looking to buy a good digital camera and a Sony DVD camcorder. I will check out the fortress chain, and will stay away from Tsimshatsui.

Did you check out the fish markets when you were there? looks amazing. Were staying in the renaissance hotel. Have you ever been?

Fish markets? No, though I did visit Aberdeen, where folks live on boats and there is a fish market. It reminds me of the opening scenes from Enter the Dragon when the various combatants are being ferried over to a junk :)

Haven't stayed in the Renaissance (either one) but it looks like a quality hotel. The New World Renaissance is in a particularly good location.
