I turn on my pc this morning i got the dell screen and then the black screen and a little flashing line which is normal but it stays there and dosent go to the windows xp screen

I tryed the Dell windows xp disk and ran the repair windows xp did not work

I tryed removing the hard drive and putting it into an external hard drive case and attaching it to another pc useing usb could see all the folders on the C: drive but i want two folder on the desktop which are of great importance but i go into documents and settings and then my administrator folder and say access denied

I tryed the recovery console on the dell windows xp disk and says
    C:/windows
and the asks for a administration password and then i enter the password i had for my administrator account and say invalid password

is there any way of getting the two folders for the desktop and not wiping the whole disk and installing a fresh copy of windows xp

yes. Take ownership of the folder and all subfolders. Grant yourself permission on the folder and on all subfolders.

    Steps:
    • Right click on the folder that gives you access denied.
    • Choose properties
    • Click on the security tab
    • Click the Advanced button
    • Click the owner tab
    • Set yourself as the owner
    • Click the box marked 'replace the owner on subcontainers and objects'
    • Go to the permission tab in the advanced security dialog box.
    • Give yourself full control
    • Click 'reset permission on all child objects...'

Someone tell me if there is a smarter way to do this. It's something about NT SIDs being different on different machines.

Sorry I was looking at my win2k machine. XP doesn't show you the security tab by default. Instructions on how to see it are here:

If you can get into the recovery console, try running fixroot and fixmbr commands. Sounds like the boot record on the drive is damaged.
