Depends where you're staying really.. New York is well spread out. I was there for a few days recently and I found a few nice bars. Really though, you want to get down to Greenwich Village area for cool nightlife..

There's a good jazz bar in Chelsea, on 26th Street called Kavehaz which I found in my guidebook. Free jazz every night, really nice atmosphere, and they serve food.

    Kev.

Just to point out, Chelsea is actually a Gay Community of NYC.

I found that out the hard way!!! ( A story for another day). I actually stayed in Chelsea International Hostel when I was in NYC, nice part of the city. Check out some of the Irish pubs. Was in a few of em but can't remember the names of 'em. Think "Tir Na Nog" was one, its near Penn Station.

While I dont endorse travelling thousands of miles to go to Irish bars Nevada Smyths is a cracking bar on the lower east side, its pretty famous so ask around and people will know.

Its great for pre-club jar or an all nighter.

nevada's is good craic alright, unfortunatly most bars in NY are Irish in someway. Check out a place calles Solas, it's way downtown as far as I can remember (around 2nd street or thereabouts) .. never failed to have a good night there (about 5 years ago)
