That is very, very much not a virus. Its the Windows command line editor.

why does it keep poping up every time I reboot the puter

Because you use words like "puter", and your machine is mocking you.

Honestly, I don't know, but I would hazard a guess that maybe there is a program that uses it running (have you installed anything recently?) or a command in the Startup that runs it.

    go to

Start -> Run -> type in msconfig -> push enter

Go to the startup tab. What's starting up when the pc starts?

I disabled everything in msconfig except the antivirus and that seemed to solve it, there was something there called UPDREG maybe that is it, anyhow its gone, Thanks Lads and Lassies ;)

It may be a batch file in your windows startup directory. I can't remember off the top of my head where that directory is in Windows, but someone else surely will.

    \Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

updreg is a reminder to register your sound card, apparently.

It might also be AVG starting up. Try uninstalling and reinstalling AVG and see if that does the trick.

Actually that is a virus. Its called Windows.

Its simple to remove aswell. You dont need any of that Norton or AVG crap.
Just FDISK, the only useful utility that comes with Windows.

A guy working at the Microsoft Corporation sneaked it in without Bill Gates knowing. Lets hope Bill Gates never finds it.

    Wow, how original

Now, if you're going to start mouthing off about Windows, let's hear what OS you run. I'd like screenshots, and to hear the precise reasons you run this OS (and what particular version/flavour/distro), and what benefits (in detail) it has over Windows.

Unless of course it is Windows, in which case we can all point and laugh at your moronic bandwagon-jumping.

    But windows is crap...

Wow, you've overwhelmed me with your technical terms  You're clearly a highly knowledgeable expert in this field.

Care to elaborate on this comment once 'krz7e' has replied to defend him/herself (assuming they'll bother)? Bearing in mind I (and probably half the readers of this forum) have been using DOS, Linux, MacOS, AmigaOS, et al since you were in nappies?

Well, windows might be alright for you, but not for me. I use linux, because i don't want to bog down my CPU with antivirus, firewalls, spybot and adaware etc... I don't want to have to pay for my os, or software for it, and I want something that'll run smoother, and won't take about 60seconds to exit ut2004. And i have used dos, win3.1 up to xp, 'MacOS' as you call it, but i used it back in system 7.0 days.

Windows is fine, you just need to have enough processing power to run AdAware, Spybot, ZoneAlarm, AVG, possibly another firewall and so forth at the same time to keep you safe :)

Sure Linux is more secure, but if you want it secure all the time you have to keep up to date with your updates, just like Windows.
The only reason Windows gets hit more often, is that most of the script kiddies out there attack Windows...

In all honesty I find Windows fine as long as you run 2k or XP, its just the older dists. that die all the time, 98 for example.

Thats my 2 cents, flame away :P

Linux is rarely updated, maybe every six months or so, and they're usually not security updates, and windows usually gets hit because of microsofts monopoly.

I'm gonna chime in in defence of Linux also (though I wont flame, as I think that XP is a fine OS).

From a security point of view, linux is based on unix, which has > 30 years of security testing under its belt. It's a more secure OS in lots and lots of ways. It's just built that way from the ground up. It's also maturing well as an OS.

You are right though, if all the script kiddies were focused on linux, then there would be more vulnerabilities found, just not as many as MS OS's (with equivalent effort).

MP3 guy: Linux software is updated every few days in my experience, but individual distros are only released like once a year or so. How's your ubuntu experience going?

Mine is currently stalled because of graphics driver problems :( I'm back to using 2K as my default OS at home until at least this weekend.....though I am still determined to make the switch.

Sico: I do try to use linux, ubuntu 5.04 in particular, but my reasons are very boring: I want a change, I don't want to pay licence fees (still using Win2K) and linux runs everything I use on a day to day basis (UT2004 and TeamSpeak :)).

Yes, that red update icon appears maybe once a week, but that is normally updating archiving libs or something like that, not security. My ubuntu's going fine, just erased XP 2 days ago. I've got video editing and all that I need working, and UT2004 runs great on my GeForce 3 Ti 500 on it.
