Yeah someone has worked out how to do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,998 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

And somebody worked out how to ban them :\/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,190 ✭✭✭✭seamus

It's a simple HTML trick. Some people think that by doing so, they can escape detection by the Mods.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭astec123

Can I ask why the user was banned as they appeared to have done nothing. No rules against this when it was done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Yeah.. if you look at the 'o' in mobile it seems to be in a slightly different font or something...

    Appearances can be deceptive.

Ah I see it in the source now!

Why would you want someone else's nic unless you wanted to cause trouble???

    Oh come on wtf -

    You guys want wierd??

I clicked on this, wondering hmmm, imagine if it was my name!

Couple thousand members and it WAS me.

    Wierd.

But anyway. Hang on - its possible its a genuine mistake though - my name is taken from the movie Starship Troopers, and its not uncommon I meet people on CS or other games with the same name as me....could be a coincidence in this case also?

Go read the prison forum. It's the same guy registering to pretend to be other users. He uses a different font for a vowel. He registered Zaph and pretended to be him for a while, and was being a right spa. Am I the only one who subscribes to the prison forum? It's the funniest read ever.

Haha.. I wish was that cruel.

But I can actually see the difference... perhaps it's an OS X thing...

ditto on OSX (and Cloud skin).

There's a tiny difference but you'd only notice it if you were actually told there was indeed a difference.

I think someone did register as Ecks0r or something like it. I also know there's a 'grimlock' knocking about somewhere, although he's here longer I think.

Given that they should be rendered identically, it's a bug in your browser and/or your OS's text rendering then.

Yep, shabs I look through the prison forum too. I guess more people read it than you'd expect, obviously because we cant post there (how I would like to!) and we dont register as page-views either.

Some stuff there can be funny as hell. And you get to see the nice, cruel side of the Smods :)

Wrong; the specified code is a Unicode thingy that looks just like an 'o' in some fonts, and not at all like an 'o' in others. It's becoming common to differentiate them at least slightly, mostly because in browsers that support IDNs (international domain names) which is basically everything except IE, it is important to be able to tell that difference.

Yep, prison forum is great fun.

    Thank you!

Sheesh.. the very idea that there might be a bug in my OS and/or browser...

I'm not using Windows and Internet Explorer here you know?

If you stick [ b ] infront of it with out the spaces and [/b] after.... it should let you register.... right?

Right you are, it's an о not an o (Cyrillic rather than Latin).

There's a plug-in for IE that fixes the lack of IDN support. We need better solutions to the spoofing issue than relying on subtle differences in fonts, but that's another matter.

I see that bollox is up to his old tricks again. Good to see the mods are being their usual efficient selves and banned him pretty quickly. Another fan of the prison here. It's just like the real thing - everybody's innocent!
