Please mention what work your garage (mechanic) did, and what model of car you had serviced.

I think I got a good deal myself recently.

    02 Subaru Impreza Wrx

All the obvious bits, new oil / filters, + new wipers, + two new front break pads (good brand), tracking slightly adjusted

    Total €290

VW Golf MkIV 10k mile service. Oil, filter, wiper blades. Allegedly checked all fluids. 260 euro at Bradys Castleknock.
Would never have gone *near* a main dealer except for the fact that the car is still under warranty and I didn't fancy invalidating it. Will be doing the next service myself :o

I was not aware that a dealer would skim brake disks - I thought they all just replaced them if there was any concern

Just got a quote from a VW dealers there of approx €1K for a MkIV Golf 55K miles.
    Need the timing belt done.

Anyone know where I can get this done cheaper in Cork? Please PM, thanks!

If the car is still in warranty (unlikely) you might prefer a main dealer. Check for prices outside the city (mallow, or Fermoy, for example)

Otherwise any competent mechanic with the appropriate equipment should be able to do it for less than €500. My Škoda 1.6 is the same engine as is used in the MkIV Golf, and was serviced, the timing belt changed and the water pump changed for €460 all in at a Škoda dealer in Longford. The quote for the service and timing belt in Dublin was €850!

Easy money for the dealers for less hassle then isn't it?

Avensis ones can be skimmed with no problems i was told. Had bad braking vibrations on the left hand front, so got the skim and new pads and it was back to normal.

As already mentioned why not ring a couple of Skoda garages, they use the same parts anyway, they would hardly charge €1,000 for this.

    2003 CLK 200 KOMPRESSOR

    Service A. €150.00 at 12,000 miles - Park Motors

    Service B. €350.00 at 24,500 miles - Park Motors

I think currently you wont invalidate your warranty if you use genuine parts and have the work carried out by a competant garage. This main dealer / warranty thing is a thing of the past ! One of these new EU rules !
