Hypnosis by Analysis

You've heard of Paralysis by Analysis - now for its lesser know cousin ...

I like to think of my poker play as a work in progress and as per the advice of some emminent boarders i have settled down to playing stts and reading up on the game

to pass the time between hands (and to keep my mouse finger from twitching at silly hands) i flick between poker sites trying to broaden my education

this has been going very well for the last few days and patience and disciplined raising and folding are starting to show a healthy profit

then, this evening i'm playing on a £10 stt and reading through the 2+2 forum
i'm even complimenting myself on my new found poker maturity
i read a number of posts discussing the probabilities involved with 89 suited and then about 10 hands later get dealt that very hand (spades)
firstly i make a needless call in early position, then i compound this by a calling a miminum rasie preflop
flop comes 7s5sJd - one all-in, two folds
now, despite my newly acquired knowledge of 89 probabilities, i don't even bother considering this and call automatically
raiser shows two red queens ... and i'm on my way to writing this posts

while it is a distinct possibility that i had never actually lost my fishy ways and the previous solid play had been just a blip (and although i had quite a few outs, i firmly believe that i had no real choice in the matter because my subconcious had been cruely hypnotised by all that maths!

... either that or i'm back to making excuses again!

I think your chances of winning where about 3 or 4 to one, so you were way behind obviously. however sometimes it pays off to take a chance now and then. I sometimes call two all ins if I hit a very good flush draw on the flop. But it has to be early in a MTT that hasn't cost me enough to care about too much.

But the golden rule really is to lead the betting when you're ahead instead of being led when you know you are behind. unless you can hit an absolute monster cheaply.

    best of luck, d.

You had a double gutshot straight draw with a flush draw which isn't a bad draw to be fair. Any spade, any 10 any 6 will most likely win it for you. Depending on pot odds it mightn't have been a bad decision to call the all-in.

Hes a favourite to win the hand so it really doesnt matter what the pot odds are

He is a favourite. The lone flush draw is 2:1. The straight draw is around 2:1. Combined he is better than even money to win the hand.
