Thinking of buying a new graphics card...

    one of the following..
Nvidia GeForce 6800GT or ATI Radeon X800XL

Any advice on which is better ( I like the capture ability of the ATI) but I also like Nvidia cards.

    Any advice would be great

You should probable modify your post newbie2 to include a Poll with a choice of the 2 cards mentioned above.

    My preference?
    6800GT

Is the capture capability something you'll use? If so, I'd go with the x800xl.

Unless you're going to be using linux, then it's a no brainer: 6800GT

Given the choice myself, I'd take the 6800GT, but I'd say it'd be a close call for a windits only user tbh (having said that, I'd check the hardware review sites for the definitive answer).

6800gts r getting cheaper by the day... €240 is the cheapest i've seen so far(for 256mb) €220 for 128mb. Haven't seen an x800xl that cheap yet...

    check http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041222/index.html for benchmarks..

I went with X800XL only 2 weeks ago as it seems to be just pipping the 6800GT by a few fps on benchmarks ive read on the net.
Most of all though its a better card for HL2 and its mods which i play a lot.
Also i play a lot of racing sims here again the x800xl i preferred because it has better FSAA performance which i love to run on my racing games.
My most recent game Battlefield 2 seems to love my new card too as im running all high settings @ 1280x1024 4XFSAA and getting 40-90 fps ,if i drop to 2XFSAA i gain about 5-10 fps.
If your a Doom 3 head the 6800GT is slightly the better performer.
I also prefer the 16 pipelines on X800XL compared to 12 on 6800GT.
TBH either of the 2 are great cards with only a few fps between them.
Both perform better that the other on different games but over all they balance out about even.
Make sure you have a decent psu,i went from 300watt to a 500 watt to accomodate my new card.

    thanks for the help guys

it seems that the nvidia is the most popular but the ATI has the capture capability - and its €20 cheaper. mmmmm tough decision. most benckmrking that i've seen has the two fairly evenly matched.

This is gooas it's that game which is forcing my hand so to speak....

I must also add that the FSAA quality is better on ATI cards IMO (having just switched to a 6600GT from 9800pro....long story). I (think I) notice more jagginess with 2xAA on the nvidia card (though it does have a 2qxAA, which is a mid ground between 2x and 4x AA apparantly).

which is better the leadtec or the gigabyte?

personally i think the gigabyte looks sexier, but i can't see any real difference in the specs

check the reviews, some cards will clock better than others... Im going for the cheapest as im gonna be watercooling it... will prob go for the leadtec n mod the heatsink to still cool the ram
