Best Rugby Game?

Hi, I've been trying to hunt down rugby games since i first got interested back in 1995.

The current best one is EA's offering 'Rugby 2005', while its prolly the best at the moment, it lacks decent AI.

Other notable ones are last years World Championship Rugby and the ancient Jonah Lomu's Rugby.

There's also a decent offering from the League version, called 'Rugby League', which is more or difficult to find in the NH. Theres a follow up to this game out soon, but only on ps2 and PC.

    So for me its between

There is a new one coming out, called Rugby Challenege 2006 , which will have more teams, play classic matches etc.

Anyway, don't all vote for Jonah Lomu ;) I still play it regularly and Rugby 2005 beats it(but not for nostalga).

    Anyone any thoughts?

    There really isnt any.
Being a player of PES, NHL and Madden Series; the Rugby games I've played just never come close and I'm just left annoyed at the amount of bugs / poor graphics and terrible AI.
Shame really... if they could make it anywhere like Madden, EA would haev the rugby title sown up

i know you said don't but jonah lomu was great for its time. still good craic. haven't played any new ones but heard they're ****e. rugby games might never get to the stage of a football game like PES because they just don't sell. certainly not internationally like the (rubbish)fifa games or the (excellent)pes games do just because of the popularity and hype behind football globally.

Theres more popularity behind rugby than ever before i think, hence the amount of new games, and especially with WC 07 come soon, there will be a licence tie in, just depends on who has the best engine.

As far as i know there are 3-4 developers working on different games.

Rugby 2005, typically EA Sports has all the game modes(lions tour, world cup, heniken cup, super 12, etc.)

It also has something similar to the master league in PES, where you start off with default players and trade in new players, I'm into season 2 with Munster and trying to get hold of a decent FH(half the battle)

I have the two older EA games - 2001 and 2004 I think.

2001 had reasonable gameplay but a poor selection of teams, skills etc

2004 had more teams & tactics but the gameplay is poor.

The new one looks much better but I'm reluctant to buy it until it comes down to a price where it doesn't matter if its bad.
