If you had €1000 to spent on a holiday, where would you go ?
(departure in August or September. Haven't decided yet)

€1000 to include everything - flights, accomodation, food, sightseeing.
Holiday to last min of one week (ideally two).

I'm thinking along the lines of France, Estonia, Belgium, Holland, Scotland, the U.S, Canada. (Last two options might be pushing it on €1000!:D)

I want to stay in nice accomodation which can be either a quality hostel or hotel. (Single room. I stayed in many hostels last year in Oz, NZ, Cook Islands and it can be a real pain to stay in dorms ...... no matter how nice your roomates are! ;) )

Somewhere a bit different, with nice people, nice food and scenery/sights.
(I'm not into the whole beach/party/pub crawls scene)

    Suggestions ?

    Cheers,
    Silvera.

I think you'd be doing pretty well to get two weeks out of €1000, especially of you're not staying in dorms. Single rooms in hotels/hostels tend to be pretty expensive.

You'd be lucky to get change from two weeks holidaying in Dublin with 1000 notes.

if you want to get the most out of a grand go somewhere like india where you can live like a king on that money

india is a different world really compared to Ireland and youll find very nice single rooms all over the country for very very very reasonable prices also its a fascinating country, loads to see and do and the food is amazing. theres no real big party/pub scene unless you go to mumbai or delhi, the people are very friendly although you do have to use a bit of common sense when it comes to some of the scammers. youll meet loads of friendly backpacker types along the way aswell.

in Delhi ( a boring dump btw which is best avoided except for the going home bit )for instance on the last 2 days of a 4 month trip i got a room with a big ass double bed, massive tv with 100 channels, my own shower/jacks, room service for under a fiver !

I'll second Croatia, beautiful country and really cheap. Go there before it gets too popular.

If your looking for somewhere classy Dubai is the place to go,it's an amazing place and i cannot recomend it highly enough :)

And with a budget of €1000 that should just about cover Dubai as the air fare is dirt cheap to get over there and the cost of living is next to nothing.

Croatia, being a tourist destination of the elite in the old Soviet Bloc, is not cheap.
I'd put it on par with the cheaper EU countries.

There are few hostels to speak of, accomodation is by way of "sobe" which is basically a room in some grannys house. Don't worry about finding accom, it finds you.
The rooms are very variable and range from a matress on the floor to a nice en suite.
Prices for both appear to be the same! (€20 on €12-15 off).

I found the young people to be very cold so not a place to visit alone.
    Go with friends/ gf/ bf.
There are a few too many Irish (as a % of tourists) there for my liking.

The country is beautiful though, really spectacular.
    Food is good too.

In Dubrovnik last year a shirtless northern lad walked into a pharmacy in the old town, and asked for velcro, when she didn't understand he just raised his voice, threw his foot up on the counter and opened and closed the velcro fastner on his sandle. I was embarrased for the whole nation.
The food is great and it is cheap and you can actually afford a decent amount of wine with it.

If I had to go anywhere right now, I might go to Thailand and travel round a bit. Don't know about flights but the rest should be cheap enough.

What about Egypt 400 for the flights it has great weather, culture and lots of independent travellers and is cheap. If you could stretch to 1500 I'd say Costa Rica or Peru for something really different.

    Some good suggestions.

I've seen 7-night package hols advertised (by www.thetraveldepartment.ie) in the Herald to the south of France (incl Monaco) for c.€800 (tho the €200 deposit is non-refundable/transferrable).

Anybody been on one of these ?

    France ? I don't think so.

There's not much to Monaco really, yes it's nice to see, but after 2 or 3 hours you're done.

Nice is OK, but I'd take up some of the other suggestions.

    Personal Opinion :o

My parents went to Italy with The Travel Department, and are have booked 7 nights in Sicily for July. They thought they were great, and very well organised- esp if you want to see and do as much as possible in your time away.

I recommend Brussels having been there twice. Its such a lovely city, great tourist area, lots to see, some great beer, plus its very central, ya can always get a cheap train ride to Holland or france if ya get fed up of being in Belguim.

In Europe I would go on the Black Sea, Bulgaria or Ukraine.

Outside Europe I would like to go to either Brasil or Venezuela...not sure 1000 Euro would be enough for 2 weeks though (flight is expensive)

Any long-haul flights will set you back the guts of a grand at this time of the year, One thing is for sure you'd be doing well to get by on a grand for 2 weeks in Ireland.

Croatia/Slovenia is getting great reviews from anyone whose been recently while its not very cheap the value is good.

I read good reviews for both countries.
However, I read that they are also the favourite holiday destinations of Russian mafia types

I'm starting to lean in favour of going to France, or perhaps Belgium ! :)

don't bother with Mexico... I've been there twice, and it's not as cheap as people think!!! besides, the Mexicans can be quite rude... I speak fluent Spanish, and they still tried to pull one over on me... I was there with my brother 2 summers ago, and they treated us like ****.. and I'm not a kid... I'm 28!! NY is fun if you haven't been there, but can get somewhat expensive... I live in New Jersey, about an hour from NYC... I love to go up there, but it can get expensive to go bar hopping and club hopping... I used to think it was cheap to go over to Ireland, but that's starting to get expensive too.... you people have intrigued me into checking out Croatia... is it really that beautiful and friendly? do many people speak English there? how far a flight is it from Ireland? maybe I'll venture there for a bit when I am back in Ireland on holiday next year...
