Advice on digital camera purchase

Ive always been interested in photography but its only now that i actually want to get into it and im in need of direction from experience.

I dont intend to get into it in a serious way, its mainly for myself and my own enjoyment so super-high quality isnt important but over 3 megapixel wold be nice.

Id be willing to spend over 250 euro if the deal was worth it

And i dont mean to sound pretentious, but a small versatile camera would be preferable, something along the lines of the canon Ixus perhaps.

    Any help appreciated...

    or this camera http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/74292/art/fuji/finepix-s5500.html

it's not as small as Optio but far smaller then on the picture.

    10x zoom

I'll be getting one of those for my Dad on technikdirekt.de for slightly cheaper (and far less hassle from what I understand of pixmania!)

    clicky

Thanks for all the input, opened my eyes to what is out there... some of the suggestions were a bit big for my kind of usage but the sentiment was right, perhaps ill go for a true quality camera in the future but for the moment something small and versatile is my aim.

Ive been hitting camera shops all over Dublin these last few days and im popping to France next Tuesday so hopefully ill pick something up.

    Thanks again you guys

Before you go - definately go for the S5500, excellent camera.

Just back from France and in the end i found the Pentax Optio S50 for €179 in Auchan with a 256mb card for a further €30... excellent camera, quality is sweet and the batteries lasted me 5 days of occassional snapping and one night of continuous picture taking (Bastille Day Celebrations).

Thanks for all the help people, much obliged.

i'm just about to buy a Sony cybershot P200. I have a few friends that have it and its seems like a really good camera. I used to have a Canon ixus 500, which was a really nice camera(someone robbed it though :( ) and i was then given a present of a coolpix E4600. I really wasn't impressed with it at all. The shutter lag is terrible making shots without the flash very hard, and when u take a shot with the flash, it takes like 7/8 sec, maybe more to get it self back for the next shot. Another this that really annoyed me about it was that the video has no sound. I mean wtf nikon? what were u thinking? who wants to make silent movies like. so yeah don't get the E4600. The pictures are actually decent but they don't make up for all the other cons.
