The xp boot cd doesnt load automatically?

Try changing your boot options in your bios...

Or Press F8 or F10 as its booting and it will give you the option to boot from cd.

    Think its F10

it's f12 to get into the boot options menu on a dell , f2 to get into the bios.

also if you stil have the drivers cd you can run a diag by booting up off the driver disk , it should test the memory and everything else just to make sure.

go to the dell support site, it will ask for the serivce tag of your machine .. once u stick it in , u can then just download what u need ( but they need to be installed in a particular sequence so be careful)
