The prices in the US are a laugh. I'm just back from Vegas, we had a hired Mustang which we drove to the Grand Canyon and back. A fill cost $30!
It makes cars like the Mustang almost practical.

petrol is half the price in the usa making running a 4 liter v8 fully practical. i know amurphy it sounds like a hugh rise and its all relative but u can still drive a nice car there for very little. also depreciation on nice cars is half what it is here, making a big merc totally practical.

As a matter of interest and research, what route did you take from vegas to the Grand Canyon? Im off out there in November and some info would be appreciated.

We took the 93 south out of Vegas, across the Hoover Dam. Stopped there for a bit, then continued down to Kingman, and turned onto the 40 east.
You stay on the 40 for about 2.5 hours, turn north on the 64 at Williams and then you've about an hour to the Grand Canyon. You're also on the way to Amarillo if you go far enough, so plenty of opportunity for amusing text messages back home.

The trip takes about 4-4.5 hours each way. Most of it is on the Interstate so you can average 70 easily.
The temp was over 100 all the time though, so plenty of water. I also
suggest getting a map *before* you start, not 30 miles down the wrong road like we did.

    edit:
I'll scan the map and put it up in a while. Anyone want to see the Mustang?

    Thanks,

I take it you could manage to get there and back in a day? In November it would be dark around 5-6 pm, Also Arizona is in a different time zone just to be awkward.

Thanks for the map and I would love to see the mustang:D

America seems to think its their god given right to have cheap petrol...

Did that Vegas to the Grand Canyon trip, very cool to see Hoover Dam and the Canyon. Id recoment the Helicopter trip over the Canyon, you will get a better view of it then any of the rim viewing areas.

Just for reference, Gas is $1.25 in Shanghai right now, .. if you could afford it.

I reference the cost to fill the van (20 gals). it's either <$40 or More. kind of a mental barrier.

Anyway its 4th July. Independance Day, but as someone pointed out, with our ONLY friend in the world bein the UK. might be best to snuff that Independance stuff for a year or two... least we have none. :)

Mr Bush made it clear that his agenda at Gleneagles would be driven by an assessment of US interests and that any Kyoto-style deal on carbon emissions would wreck the US economy.
