    Or

    When in Rome, roam !

You could visit that fella that lives in the art gallery, public transport is cheap and there's a subway. Get comfortable shoes, the old city has everything within walking distance.

Where are you staying and for how long ?

Don't forget to eat at local places rather than tourist traps.

Was there 8 years ago. Recommend you get on a guided tour of this city! Because even if you have no interest in History/Arcitecture/Michelangelo/Vatican, Rome will "WOW" you, and there is no point looking at all this and not understanding it. (also only Pyramid in Europe.
Nightlife - totally different to Ireland I can tell you - pints? try expressos;pubs? where? try "jumped up" cafes.
    Excellent choice of restaurants though

I would defo recommend the bus tour and the Vatican is amazing. Get a tour of it thou, only €12 as far as i remember but well worth it.

Didnt see a nightclub at all and drink in pub/cafes is ridiculous! But you can buy beer in shops for 30c :D

you won't be short of stuff to do... there are plenty of museums and archaeological sites to visit. be aware that quite a few shops, and some tourist attractions, are closed on mondays.
if you're planning on visiting museums, the colosseum, etc, there's a great ticket you can buy which gives you access to the colosseum, the palatine hill & museums, the baths of caracalla, a few other archaeological sites and Palazzo Altemps and Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, 2 of the best museums for ancient artefacts. the ticket costs €12 if you're a student (22 if you're not, i think) and lasts for 7 days. really worth it.
also there's the vatican museums and st peter's, which you really shouldn't miss.
if you ARE going to the vatican museums, you need to get there at about 7.30am, otherwise the queue will be massive. ditto the colosseum although you don't have to get there quite early.
also quite a lot of places are free, notably the forum, and if you have a student card you can get into some museums free too.
can't help you much with the nightclubs but try picking up a copy of roma c'e (i think) from a newsstand - costs about a euro and gives a list of what's going on in rome that week. comes out on wednesdays. has an english section, too. however i spent last summer in rome and all the best nights out are down at one of the beaches, that's usually where you find a lot of the Romans.

Was in Rome last week for three days - boy was it hot. Even the locals were complaining about the heat so early in summer! Things to do: St. Peter's Basilica (Be warned I was refused because of the no shorts rule. Pack a pair of lightweight trousers. Ladies must cover shoulders and be modestly dressed.) We arrived at the queue for the Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel at 8.30. The queue looked like a queue for a U2 Concert. We walked from the top of the line to the end and it took us over ten minutes. The people at the end of the line had at least a three hour wait to get in so we decided against it. A Roman friend of mine suggested that if you go to the Sistine Chapel about an hour before closing time the queue is sometimes non-existent. Be prepared to pay 2.50 for a coke in any store (here a Spar probably charges 1.50) Water is cheaper the bigger the bottle. 500ml 1 euro, 1.5l 2 euro. We drank three 1.5 litre bottles day 1! Go to the old residential part of Rome Traverese I think it's called. Food and everything is cheaper there. And the streets are tall and narrow and cooler! Metro is 1 euro per journey, Buses and tram the same for 75 minutes travelling. Hop on a tram somewhere. You can always get the same one back. Train from Leonardo da Vinnci airport to Termini station is 9.50 each way but worth it as the airport is a way out. Bought the ticket for train from a ticket seller on the train station platform. Oh be careful about taxis. From Termini station to our hotel near the Colleseum cost us 15 euro. I was ripped off even by a metered cab. You'll have a great time. I've probably left a lotout that you want to know - just ask!
