GTA 3 was my favourite, maybe because it was so groundbreaking at the time but it's always been the best in my eyes. San Andreas annoys me to be honest.

GTA III first for the initial wow factor
Vice City for it's 80s cheese and motorbikes (nothing like burning down vice beach at top speed:))
I practically lived in Vice City for a week.
San Andreas last. it's good, damn good in fact... i just cba with games any more.

me too...They just cant hold my attention. I can appreciate how good they are but just cant play them for long. Some games really grab me though and I play them till the end. Last ones to do that were Chronicles of Riddick & KOTOR.

Vice City, because I know it inside out at this stage. I also managed to get 100% in it. I prefered it to GTA3 because there was more to do, it was bigger while not being too big (San Andreas) and it has motorbikes.
San Andreas is great too, but it's so damn big. 50 hours play and I still don't know where I'm going half of the time. The only sure fire way I know of getting from city to city without getting lost is to drive on the train tracks.

I thought that was just me

Is it just that games arent so groundbreaking anymore(HL2 as opposed to HL) or is it that games are being severly overratted(Doom3 anyone?)

Had to be GTAIII for me (I think I may have argued this elsewhere :o )
I might have voted for some of the origional if they were there , they brought me through my childhood.

(PS Steviec , Have you seen this yet?)

Crazy, I'm the only one to vote for SA.

GTA3 was great for the initial wow factor and was certainly the most groundbreaking but it was so much more limited when you look back at it. VC was the weakest IMO because it was just the same game in a different setting, I never got what all the fuss was about. But then SA just added so much more and leaves you with so many things to do, it hooked me in like neither of the other two and for a much longer time.

GTA Vice City for me. It had the best soundtrack, best jokes and was much more fun than the other 2 overall.

    Next would be GTA 3.

San Andreas last. The soundtrack was quite dull, Only the last few missions were standouts and despite being extremely big there was much more fun to be had in the other two. Also far too much driving between pointsin a mission.

GTAIII was my favourite. If VC and SA never happened, and there was some sort of hybrid of the two in their place, it'd be cool.

I liked VC for the music, the 80s and the story.
I liked SA for the size of the map and the huge-ness of it all.
If there was a mix of both games, it'd be great.

This goes for me as well.
GTA3 was the only one I replayed a few times...loved the OST.
VC had an initial greatness about it but after I cleared it I was all "Meh" about playing it again. Not as much fun to pick up and playt as 3 was...only better thing about it was the helicopters and motorbikes.
SA is still lying uncleared (about 30% I think) in my PS2....and I just can't be arsed playing it lately. Wipeout pure is my only gaming fix the last few months. Maybe I'm getting old...

GTA3 was great at the time but then when Vice City came I thiught that was better and the same with San andreas. Still I thiught ther was alot of things they could have done better on and hope they do for the next version

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

I can't decide... they seem more like 3 versions of the same game... three different areas/storylines with a few engine upgrades along the way.
I've just completed SA having clocked up something crazy like 80 hours of play (yeah I was taking my time and enjoying the little things), which is almost on par with FF7 in terms of value-for-money.
I thought the soundtrack in SanAndreas was a huge let-down... especially wctr, which I didn't find funny at all :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

    San Andreas for:
The sheer scale of the game.
The soundtrack - 80's cheese music is good n' all but nothing quite compares to speeding down Las Venturas highway with Killing In The Name by RATM blaring on the radio.
    Aerial dog-fights with the Hydra.

Although I will say I prefered the characters from VC.

III my fave. Well, two is. But III is the best of the ps2 bunch. Three didn't bite off more than it can chew. It just feels better. Nowhere near the amount of glitches as the other two. San An is so frustrating to play because the "fog" is far too short, cars pop up everywhere, the player catches up with the scenery still loading, it's very ropey at times and edges which should be round, i.e. hills and bends, are very sharp indeed. This is the same in VC, albeit to a lesser extent.

The radio is better in III too. With all that said, they're all still very decent games.

Great idea having a poll without the original in it

None of the sequels grabbed me the same way as the first GTA. They all felt a bit too samey (although I think I really over-played the first game tbh). I can't play 3 or Vice City for longer than a quarter of an hour without getting bored.

The original GTA was the one i spent the most time on, but out of those 3, it has to be Vice City. As was said, it's not too big and still has motorbikes, helis, planes etc. I enjoy just roaming the streets in vice city. In san andreas, it just gets boring quickly. THe levels are too big but also ,not detailed enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭Bubba

I don't know how u guys can vote for anything but SA.
Ok wen GTA3 first came out it was amazing because we had never seen anything like it before and we were shocked by what we could do with this game.
Then Vice City had improvements on the first with motorbikes, music and your character actually talked.

Then with SA they went all out. Sometimes it can be annoying to drive so far but you have every vechicle possible to do it in. Even a jetpack! Plus you can get your haircut, change clothes, go and get some food, cycle a bike, visit your girlfriend, SWIM, fly planes, learn karate......etc. There's just so much more to the game and i can't believe most of you are picking the other ones.
Anyway, that's just my view. Anyone agree?

Yeah SA was impressively huge, but there was nothing to do... certainly less to do per square mile than the other GTAs.
San Andreas strikes me as a game that was rushed to completion... it seems like they spent more time on creating this huge virtual playground than making missions.
Many times I'd find a little area of the map that would make for some great missions, but it was never used... so much wasted potential.
I wouldn't imagine it's a huge amount of work creating missions, especially phone-based missions like the ones from GTAIII (El Burro and his donkey porn stash, among others) where they don't have to make any cut-scenes... it's just answer the phone, listen to a bit of chatter, do the mission.
Honestly, I'd prefer if they took the money they payed A-list actors and spent it on more developers, dedicated to mission-building.

Yeah I agree that it's a big step forward... lots of very cool features... and technically San Andreas is the clear winner.
But when all is said and done, it's a question of "How fun was it?".
As I think back over the other GTA's, I'm reminded of what SanAndreas was lacking game-play/mission wise... and I don't think I'll ever get over the shock of how revoltingly unfunny the radio stations where in SA. They must have fired their old writers or something :(
I think a lot of it is about your expectations, I feel a little let-down by SA, but only because the previous two games were so good.

yes but i was focusing the poll on three games with similarities, gta3/vc/sa.
The original was bloody great but i thought it deserves a league of its own. ;)

    Vice City for me.

San Andreas is just too excessive.

Another vote for Vice City. The dialogue was genuinely funny, the soundtrack extremely catchy and the missions were well designed.

I think San Andreas is too big. There are good parts but they're lost among all the crap. Games are way too big nowadays in general. Movies spend months in editing but everybody in gaming seems obsessed with quantity and value nowadays.

The games at the moment are just heaping on the empty calories that keep you chewing, but don't satisfy. Hence why nobody finishes games anymore. Too much filler, not enough killer. I beat Vice City twice. I've gotten bored of SA half way through.

Me too :D - I had the demo off some magazine and try and see how quickly I'd get my wanted level up in the 3 minute limit.

the original GTA's were fun for killing and getting your wanted level up but besides that they were the most boring... the missions were crap and didnt have a storyline

SA is the best for me the game is just huge granted it can be annoying going from one side of the map to another as it just so big but there is so much to do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,254 ✭✭✭Citizen_Erased

Thats the problem , its huge and there is very little to do.

I think thats the multiplayer one is it? To be honest spending hours driving from one end to another can feck off tbh.

On the note of getting wanted for the craic I found GTA 3 to be the best. Standing on the top of the parking lot in Staunton and then making a courageous run to your base and hopefully not get capped.

Yeah that was scitso great craic. The only gang capable of actually killing you aswell.
