I gotta admit, i was never one for maths.
But i feel if I'm to make any kind of progress with my poker game, I better start reviewing!
Can anyone recommend some reading on the likes of pot odds and card odds etc?
I've looked at a few books but felt like i was back a school again! Or am i kidding myself in thinking that I have to have a really good knowledge of this?

    Any advice?

    dave

I have a terrible knowledge of pot odds and hand odds. I have a rough idea of when to draw to the flush or open-ended straight, depending how much is in the pot and what the bet is into me. Apart from that I couldn't tell you how likely I am to hit my overcards on the turn or river, or anything more advanced.

I doubt it's possible to be very accurate in the heat of a hand, the only thing you can do is read up about possible and likely scenarios and recognise them when they cop up in the heat of battle.

You can't go wrong with Sklansky's Theory of Poker though. Have a good long search through the web there's plenty of websites with the info. And have a look at twodimes.net and google for pokerstove, it's a nifty little download that lets you compare hands/possible hand ranges.

Quick way of working pot odds on the spot

After flop, multiply the amount of outs by 4

After turn, multiply amount of outs by 2

    e.g Open ended str8 draw = 8 cards needed = 8*4 = 32% (2/1) after flop.... 8*2=16% (6/1) after turn.

    hmm ok, so

for eg. 5678 = open ended draw
    turn comes = 32% on hitting a card (4 or a 9)
    river comes = 16% on hitting a card (4 or a 9)

    am i right?

    Yup,

    so AJ V A4

    For a 4 to hit

    River card = 3 outs * 2 = 6% .... :o;)

Yeah I didn't want to bring that one up...:D

I wasn't far out behind you, had deuces, flop came 6J6, other guy put me all in, he had the J...

Last time I decide to pay a looser game ;)
