Hi I need help organising my new computer system in my new house
My family owns 2 centrino wireless laptop and an oldish pentium 4 pc,
we want to get ntl cable digital
have a wireless network between the two laptops and also internet conncetion for Pc
WE also want to use voip with ntl digital using 4 portable phones,
and want to set up a surround sound system in two rooms
    Questions
What do I need to connect the laptops wirelessly
will the ord. ntl modem work
what do i need for the VOIP(wireless)
can I get one yoke for them all to work
can you see any problems in this set-up?
My sister i sin Germany, could shee get anything for cheaper?

    for the surround sound;

I am a complete novice to surround sound and need lots of advice,

I am just moving into new house, and in two rooms they are "wired" for surround sound, one has five holes up high in the walls with wires coming out and at bease of one wall three connected wires, that is where you connect the stereo/dvd/tv i think,

the problem is it is on the wrong wall to the Tv,
    What i am asking is,
Can i get some sort of connecting wire to connect to tv on other wall?
what sort of speakers do I have to buy?
can I get tiny ones which wont stick out too much?
will it work with my ordinary Tv/Dvd?
could I use it with a Laptop?
Would it be cheaper to buy online?

    THanks for your help

I'll look after the first line of questions
    Dec

What do I need to connect the laptops wirelessly?
A wireless router a Linksys wrt54g would do perfectlly

will the ord. ntl modem work
    Yes

what do i need for the VOIP(wireless)
You get a box that would plug into a switch (or a port on the wireless router, above)

can I get one yoke for them all to work?
the wireless router will do most of it

an you see any problems in this set-up? No

My sister i sin Germany, could shee get anything for cheaper?
    Not really maybe save shipping

Well i am running a pretty big wireless network in my house at the moment. I have my moms pc which is connected to the broadband straight through the modem. I then have a wireless router that plugs into the broadband modem. That transmits the signal around the house. Then there are 3 pc's with wireless cards in each that connect to the internet via the router. Pretty simple :) .

4 Laptops u just need sumting that will allow them to connect to the wireless network. U can get wireless dongles which just plug into the usb on the laptop and your away, very simple ass well :).

The ntl modem will work but u also need a wireless router that just plugs into the modem to get the signal.

I have never used voip so i really dont no how it works

I have a surround system in my lounge that i just setup. It is all connected to a small form factor pc that sits under the tv. Its also simple enough to set up. U could set the surrounp up with your laptop as long as the soundcard has those options, u will need to check that.

Hope this helps u, my setup sounds very similar to wat ur looking 4 and i have no problems :)

Make sure it is 802.11g not 802.11b

Having the WiFi certification logo on the box is also a plus.

I'd be really careful about the wireless router i'd choose if i was you. You'd want one that can do GOOD QoS, so as to prioritise your VoIP traffic above all other traffic. That'd allow you to make decent calls even if people are P2P'ing on other computers.

The Linksys WRT54G can do this with thirdparty firmware, but i dont know how good it is at the job. I've never used it for that myself.

Deckie27 et al are doing a fine job with your first line of questions, so I'll get you started on the sound lot:

    - Unless you're a massive audiophille, a good set of PC surround speakers will do the trick. The benefits of this compared to a "true" home cinema system will be:

    1) Price. Way cheaper.
    2) Easy to use with your PCs.
    3) Satelites are usually tiny, as per what you want.

So, I'd recommend you look at the high end Logitech 5.1 systems or the Creative Megaworks. Anything more than 5.1 will be a bit superfluous for DVD really - PC speakers go up to 7.1 these days.

If your DVD does not have a decoder for the sound built in, you'll have to buy one separely. If it does have a decoder you're sorted. In the same vain, if the TV has audio outputs (RCA) or even a headphone out, you'll be fine with that.

As for the cables, etc, if you go with a PC speaker system, the subwoofer or a small control module sometimes, houses the connections for everything and presumably the sub will be under your TV/DVD setup. Center satellite needs to be on the TV or right under it in the middle, two front satellites to each side and two to the back of the room. You can buy extension cables for the satellite speakers if they are not long enough. You can also hide away the cables neatly, if you set it all up right.

Buying online, defo cheaper but make sure you check shipping rates on these - such speaker sets are pretty heavy and you may incur extra charges.

You buy an adapter that will connect into your router on one side, and into the phone socket for your wireless phone base. I'm assuming your 4 phones are all handled by the one base.

and how much would that cost, where can I buy one?
is it a little few euro job or a big yoke?

    They can be quite expensive.

This is an example. You can get it from blueface.ie for €100

Isnt that the same thing as This

and will that work for phone when the pc is turned off!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,240 ✭✭✭Endurance Man

Yes, the router continues transmitting even when the pc is off, as long as it is getting a signal from the broadband modem :)
