hdd failure

about a week ago i started up my computer and before it got to windows it said "disk boot error insert system disk". i turned it off and then started it up again and it booted to windows normally. then after a week it said that it was missing some system files in the windows folder before it boots into windows. i then suspected some sort of virus.
so i booted into knoppix, a live linux distro, and just used my computer to access some of the hdd files. today the bios does not detect the hdd, nor does linux and it says disk boot error please insert sytem disk.

does all this mean there has been a hdd failure or could it be like a boot sector virus or something? keep into mind that i run a fully patched version of winxp and norton antivirus 2005

man i would have taken the "disk boot error insert system disk" as a serious indication that the disk was on its way out
