It's a bit of a hike according to the Hahn airport website....

Would it be worth your while spending the few extra bob to be closer to the city & not travelling for almost 2 hours each way on a coach? I've done Beauvais & Charleroi with FR before & I think it will be Aer Lingus or whoever to the main airport next time...

Its a long way alright - an hour on the bus AFAIR - stops at Frankfurt International Airport before hitting the city.
The only other option at Hahn would be car rental (assuming you could get the value out of it during the rest of your stay?).
12 euro each way according to the link that babaduck provided but its germany - and that bus will leave you right outside frankfurt train station (with access to underground, trams and suburban rail) - and it will run as per the timetable!

I was on Hahn when it was still a USAF base, it is quite a trek from Frankfurt but is perfect if you are going to Koblenz, Mainz, Wiesbaden or further South to Mannheim, Heidleburg or Trier. It is a little like the difference between Stansted and London City airport

The Bus to Beauvais takes approx. 1 hr 15 minutes. A train from Gare DU Nord to CDG takes approx. 45 minutes. When you get to CDG, you've to a) find out where your check in desk is and b) walk to it (CDG is a huge airport). Then once you've checked in you need to walk to your departure gate (remembering all the time that CDG is a huge airport, it took me about 20 minutes the last time IIRC). Compare this to Beauvais where you get off the bus, walk 20 metres to check in desk, walk 20 more metres to security checkpoint and walk 10 more metres to get to boarding gate. All in all, it's probably easier/less stressful/more time efficent to go through Beauvais than it is to go through CDG.

Don't go to Frankfurt if this is a recreational trip. Its a modern souless city. If you need to stay in one of the bigger citys, then that bus company have a connection to Cologne (a great city by comparison) - although you would pay in terms of travel time (over 2 hours!).
That bus line used to have a connection to heidelberg but it seems thats no longer running.. Maybe it would be worth getting a car out - giving you the freedom to take off to whereever you need to go the moment you land. Heidelberg is a nice little university town - a bit touristy for me but a lot of people love the place. it depends on what your into. You can get to it by car in an hour and a half.
Again, Cologne wouldnt seem a big deal if you had a car - just bomb up the autobahn.
Theres plenty of options - but it completely depends on what you want to do for the weekend as to where you should head for..

It's purely recreational and i had not planned for hiring a car - heidelberg sounds interesting - as i have never been to Germany before im sure it's all going to be interesting...

Yeah there's not much happening in Frankfurt, so I'd give it a miss if i were you...

Heidelberg is very nice. That should be a definte on your trip.

Stuttgart is a nice city. I was there last week. Its a bit further south-east of Heidelberg.

I have heard good things about Colonge and Dusseldorf. So that could also be an option.

And just as a warning to anyone flying with ryanair..... DONT. They may advertise Frankfurt Hahn as 'Frankfurt', but its a good distance away from Frankfurt am Main.

I'd have to agree with the last few posters. Frankfurt is quite boring. I've been there a fair few times and apart from the Corspewelt exhibition it is really boring.

I think the only place I'd remotely be interested in going to in Germany is Berlin for the historical aspect - have been there on business and we found it a boring country full stop...not the type of place I'd choose for recreation
