Hey i have a sony vaio PCG-TR1MP laptop and its after dying. All i need is to get the data off the hard drive so i went and got a laptop hard drive ide to usb connection (Standard 2.5' and surprise surprise sonys isn't a standard.

The hard drive is a Toshiba, Disk Drive MK3004GAH. Any thoughts ?

Its a 1.8" drive but to cause further confusion. The conversion kit i got was not only too small, the hard drive had no pins. Instead it had female connectors (Place for pins).

i think you'll probably find that you can remove/unscrew whatever connector(s) sony has on it - if you're really stuck i could take a look at it and see if i can help

Ah but i have. There is a connection on it which connects it to the motherboard. It has pins on one side to connect to the hard drive but a small "clip" type thing to connect to the motherboard. There are 6 "holes" left vacant on the hard drive. When i disconnect this from the hard disk there is nothing else to come off unless i open the hard drive itself!

Your laptop has a 1.8" HD and the adaptor you bought is for a 2.5" - it simply won't fit anyway (though you mentioned your converter kit was too small instead?). I don't recall ever seeing an enclosure or an adapter for a 1.8" out there, as you can't really buy these drives "bare" right now. They only ship as part of sub-notebooks like your TR1 or MP3 players... you're at an impass, unless you find someone with another sub-notebook to pop the drive into. Given how much these notebooks typically cost, finding volunteers could be a challenge!

    can you get some pics?

also, you can pickup 1.8" adaptors on ebay. Handy for recovery data for people from dead Mp3 Players.

Hey format man, i seen that myself andthanks for the link but my problem is that the hard drive i have doesn't have the pins on it. It has the place for pins (what the hells that called ? Female connectors ?) And from looking at the picture it sees like its made for a hard drive that has pins on it if u understand what i mean.

Your answer is in the link formatman provided:

"* This converter works with 1.8" hard drive that has the same connector as the 2.5" hard drive. 1.8" hard drive in iPOD or from Toshiba has their own proprietary connector and do not work with this converter".

So it's not gonna work with that Toshiba 1.8" drive you've got.
