Just wondered if there were any other Second Life players here from Ireland. Been playing since mid-January..... and still in awe.

    http://secondlife.com/

    For your info:
Second Life is more a 3D online community than a game. Entry costs are remarkably low at US$9.95 once-off for lifetime play (!) - should you want to obtain land there is a monthly fee. To me, it's more an experience and existance than a game.... most content in the ever-growing world is user-created and truely amazing.

PM me if you want more info or help.... :D - if I may refer you we can get split the referral in-game money hehe :D

OK, you're talking to stupid here.... what is VRML? And what used to be free? Maybe you're talking about beta test times?

no, the guys who run that are behind a thing called neocity i think it was called, a fairly vast community which they decided to shut down because nobody would pay their ridiculous fees they brought in without warning.

I've heard some really good things about this and I have to admit I'm very intrigued, but the fact is you pay to play other peoples games (and you pay alot from my understanding). In theory (or so they like to advertise anyway) you can make a living from this, but I'd say thats damn hard and incredibly risky. Basically, anything you produce through the game the *owners* of it, can lay claim to in so much as they get first dibs on licensing it, afair. It looks very impressive though and I've heard (read: Read on Wiki) that they are converting everything to open source with a view to eventually release the whole game as open source. A rather ambitions and excellent project/idea.

However, I cant say I would ever pay to play the "game" and as such, will be avoiding it until such time as it is released as open source.

Um... you know it's actually free to play? I play it. It only costs if you want to buy more ingame currency (which can be converted back into real money) or if you want to own ingame land, which isn't necessary to play. It's not one of those crappy mmorpgs where it's "free" and you can never do anything fun because it's restricted to premium users or the like. It's only useful for those who are more interested in social interaction than fps games or things like that and the control system is pretty hard to learn at first. But, I think it's worth it. Passes the time anyway :)

    Good question.

Well Second Life is a community with property rights management, meaning if you produce something in the online world, you can set the following properties:

Copy - is the item copiable or not
Mod - is the item modifiable
Transfer - is the item transferrable from one user to another

Think about this concept for a minute. Now think of items you can produce in the online world:

    - Clothing
    - Hair, shapes, skins, makeup, etc for avatars
    - Animations for avatars
    - Objects like houses, planes, cars, dogs, cigarettes, flags, WHATEVER you can think of
    - Sounds
    - Scripts that do something, like animate objects, give out notecards, produce music or sounds, WHATEVER

Some users do not produce items but rather offer services, like scripting, DJing at online parties, hosting events, yes even escort services are to be found. Well it IS an adult community.

I am not overstating if I say, the possiblilities are endless. So, some people are getting REALLY creative in the game and start making clothes, shoes, hairstyles, animations (yes, dances and cybersex anims are highly popular!), sounds, games, and they sell these items in the game. I have a friend I made in the game, she is Icelandic and started making clothes and skins. Well, her internet fees in Iceland were rather astronomical, but she so far has cashed about $2000 in game currency for real money.

The bottom line is, if you're good at something in the game, you CAN make money, but it takes dedication and sometimes hard work.

Me, I'm not interested in that aspect at all. I am a consumer in the game, I make money usually by winning at game contests in Second Life and I have enough for the odd shopping spree. I have great fun, for NO cost at all, since I only have a basic account. I can do everything in the online world except own land. And I met some extraordinary folks there!

If anyone wants to join or is already playing, my SL name is Thorval Ayoob.

Just to emphasise, you really can have pretty good fun on it, if you like social events and chatting to people. Not going to be something like counterstrike or the like. And it will take some getting used to. But hey, I think it's well worth the effort.

Yes, it's certainly no online GAME as such. Some people sign on and come into Second Life and say "now what do I do?" - there is absolutely no "goal" in it, except do what you like and have fun (and no, not just talking about the virtual sex now, there is plenty more to do than pixel passion!).

Most people view it as an international online community, not just a 3D chatroom but an escapist world to immerse yourself with your friends. Oftentimes, this virtual world extends to the real world - I know several people who met in Second Life and eventually joined their real lifes together in relationships, sometimes bridging thousands of miles. So... yes, Counterstrike it is not! ;)
