Going to thailand on 24th August for 2 and half weeks. Planning to stay in bangkok for probably two nights when we get there. Is it better to book a hotel before you go and what hotels can people recommend. Looking for somewhere nice but not mad expensive. Anyone recommend good websites to check out for bangkok hotels.

    any other advice is appreciated.

D&D Inn on the Khao San Road is a great place and it's certainly not pricey especially if you're only on a two-week holiday (not long enough, not long enough!). Double rooms either 2 beds or a large double are 750 Baht (15euro approx) and there's a nice pool on the roof as well as very cheap broadband internet access along with loads of other salon/spa like facilities etc. There's also an ok restaurant and breakfast is included in the room price. Not sure if you can book online google it and I'm sure you'll find out that way!

thanks for that. i don't mind spending more than that to get a really nice hotel. thailand is prob one of the few places you could get a plush five star hotel for about the same as a b&b in IReland! i'd be willing to spend up to 50 or 60 for a room, depending on the hotel.

    Ill second the D&D Inn.

Stayed there last November when i first arrived in Bangkok. The rooms are very clean and they have hot showers (luxury in thailand). They also have 24hr security on the door.

Id advise you to see the sights in Bangkok and then get out of there as quick as you can and head down to one of the islands like Koh Samui, if your going to be there during the full moon then try to get to the party in Koh Phangan.

    Hey

I stayed at the Ambassador Hotel on Sukhumvit Rd, I think it's four star; prices from around thirty to fifty dollars including breakfast. There are several fancy hotels around Sukhumvit.

A nice place, good facilities and great buffets. Pretty swanky area, handy for the skytrain, restaurants, shopping, bars and so on.

We stayed in the 'Davis Bangkok', very nice 5 star hotel. Its 5 minutes walk from Sukumvhit Road. Its really lovely, nice breakfast, good service, very nice interior, pool, spa, really has everything you can wish for. We payed about 60€ for a double room. First time we stayed there all superiour rooms were booked out so we got an upgrade to a suite :p
We booked it before we went there. I sent them an email and they replied with quite a high rate. I told them that I saw a travel agency offering the hotel for a better rate so they replied again with a cheaper price.

You'll always get a cheaper price if you arrive at the door. They charge a lot more when you book from Ireland...
They will always have plenty of room in the more expensive hotels.
If you're looking for something decent which it sounds like you are, stay away from the Khao San Road. Fairly cheap and nasty. Some are better than other but there's no 4 or 5 star places there. It's just for backpackers really...

thanks for the advice. would you guys recommend staying for one night or two in bangkok? We'll be arriving around 7am (will that be a problem if you just land at a hotel). Don't know whether to stay for one night or two seen as we have the full first day to look around.

also where are the nicest places to go on to. is it easy to move around. would you take a domestic flight to koh samui or whats the best way to get there.

sorry about all the questions but any advice is much appreciated!

When i go back again i am definetly taking a domestic flight to Koh Samui.

If you want to do the whole back packing thing then just catch a train from Bangkok, a first class cabin can be got for next to nothing, the journey is about 9 hours and then you catch a bus for another 1-2 hours and a boat for about another 1-2 hours.

But its a pain the ass to be honest, i think there is 3 domestic flights from Bangkok every day (busy season) and the air fare should be cheap.

I did similiar to what you are planing to do few years ago, stayed a night in Bangkok when I arrived and flight to Koh Samui next day. On return I stayed 2 nights in Bangkok. Treat yourself and go for 5 star hotels, it was no more than €50 a night when I was there and you can book everything on the internet including domestic flights to Koh Samui. ;)

Watch out for the tuktuk drivers and Queens birthday. They were saying it was Queens birthday and sales on when I arrived and were saying the same thing when I was returning. So many birthdays :D
