I think the PSU in my old Dimension 8100 is knackered. Orange light keeps flashing at the power button and nothing happens. The PSU used to kick over when I plugged in the mains, but not anymore :/

Could I use a different PSU or does it have to be a DELL specific 330w model?

Dell use their own standard of power supplies and motherboards.

i.e. the have different connectors that dont work will regular motherboards + power supplies and vice versa.

Best bet is to look on ebay or where ever for a 2nd hand dell psu. I know if you look hard enough there are sites in england that sell 2nd hand dell replacement parts.

These nice people Here do Dell compatible PSU's. And If you want to hear (read) it from the horses mouth, have a look at the Dell Forums

Also, just for future reference. Not all Dell mobo's are wired differently and some (including my own 4600) will take any standard PSU so long as the sizes are right.
