DVD ROM not functioning correctly

I have a sony vaio pcg fx501 laptop and the dvd drive on it has just died without any apparent reason.

It stopped opening altogether out of the blue. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and that solved the opening problem, but now when I put a cd in to it it wont read it, or maybe it will for a few seconds and for example if the cd autoplays into some sort of setup program maybe i'll get to press next once and then an error message will come up saying there is no cd in the drive and thats it, it wont pick it up again...

    Anybody any solutions for this?

    Frustratedly,

    ftg

Update or change anything recently? Bios, firmware?

    Possibilities:
1: do you get the same result with both CD and DVD? They use different laser wavelengths so the result might differ. If one works then it's not the motor or power units.
2: might be worth trying one of those cheap CD lens cleaners?
3: I've seen bundled CD burning software causing problems with XP especially, apparently out of the blue. Might be worth attempting to remove, restart, reinstall any installed CD burning software.

    What OS? Original/OEM version?
Have you installed anything new software all recently?
Have you installed anything new hardware all recently?
CD or DVD affected, or both?
Have you tried a bootable CD/DVD? Does this work OK?
Try a System Restore perhaps (if you have installed something recently.. *G*)

Checked for updates on www.vaio-link.com ?
