Hey Im looking to take up a martial arts and Ju-jitsu seems to be close to what im looking for. I want to do something functional that will give be confidence in my abilities to defend myself. Fitness is not of great priority to me as I do a lot of exercise anyway and I dont like all that pattern stuff (its one of the main reasons I left tkd) I basically want to be capable of defending myself effectively and efficiently. Would ju-jitsu do this?. I havent been able to dig up much detailed info on it but it sounds good. Any thoughts/info?. Thanks.

i'm assuming you read the similar threads below this one. I don't think training in JJ can disimprove you're ability to defend your self, well, unless it gives you a false sense of security. How long were you at TKD? Did you switch schools etc. to see if you were just in a crappy one?

Jujutsu is great for self defence. There are many clubs out there and its a good idea to shop around until you find one that fits your needs :)

I can't say much on traditional ju-jutsu as I've only seen a few classes. Their instructor got tapped consistently when he came out to our class. I can however speak on brazilian jiu-jitsu. It's a very effective martial art and really does give you the confidence in your ability to defend yourself.

I satyed at it quite a while I think two and half years. I got to green belt blue tip. I was in the main one of georges street across from the central hotel and to be honest you always got the feeling they were just interested in your money(which was a lot) and not you.

You sound a bit cynical about jj Kevin is there any reason?

Go to John Kavanagh's place - sbgireland.com - When it comes to jiu-jitsu, he's the man in ireland. Colm O'Reilly has a place too in Tallaght. Both post frequently on here.

Cheers Colm thats great though I live literally a 5 minute drive from harolds cross so I think I'll try there. Is it the same thing i.e. Brazillian ju-jitsu? or is the sbg thing different? Thanks.

Both Colm & John's place are brazilian jiu-jitsu.
