I Recently built my own machine just with average specs, and i keep getting this error before it boots - CMOS Checksum error. Pressing F1 loads the defaults, the machine seems to work fine after this. I tried clearing the CMOS memory using a jumper switch and taking out the battery for a while but its no good. Also i think its related but if you go into propertries in the control panel it says i need to install a new BIOS. Any Help?

You need to go into the BIOS and "Save & Exit". This will save the settings to the CMOS which is what the complaint (not error) is.

I'd be inclined to think this is a faulty motherboard, if you check the manufacturers website, they probably have a forum you could search. It could turn out to be a fairly common problem and they may have a BIOS update you can download to fix it. If not I'd start considering returning the motherboard and getting a replacement. Before doing that though maybe try replacing the cmos battery, I'm not sure if that'd make much difference but in terms of the hassle it could save RMA'ing the motherboard and then rebuilding it seems worth a try to me.

I Pretty sure its not this as i've done a bit of tweaking with the BIOS which i would have saved anyway. Will try again when i get home tho.

it could be that the cmos battery on your motherboard is dead (nearly empty).

If this is the case you can try leaving the machine on for a couple of days as it may come back to life but if not you can pick up a battery for €3 in a jewellers and pop it in and you'll be flying.

Yep, sounds to me like a bad CMOS battery. Most motherboards use a CR2032 battery, you can get them in a jewellers or some hardware stores. But check the battery type first to be sure.

What type of motherboard is it? I knew someone with an ECS K7S5A motherboard which kept coming up with a CMOS checksum error on bootup as well as randomly freezing. Replacing the PSU solved the problem.

But look at replacing the battery first, its the most likely culprit.

Ya it's the battery because when i restart a cuple of times its fine, but if i power off for a while the error comes back. Also when i load the Fail-Safe defaults it works fine but if i load the optimised defaults i het blue screen's of death and all sorts of errors.
