The latest buzz on supermarket shevles seems to be products containing plant stenols which claim to assist in lowering cholesterol levels eg. Flora Activ, Benecol yoghurt drink, etc.

Is this all just hype and BS or is there anything to this whole thing? They are putting quite a heavy markup on these products - which is fine if they do what they claim - but do they?

The claims are not all hype, though advertising is hype by nature. :) Some of the products taste good and do assist with balancing the good to bad cholesterol ratio levels in the blood. I tried a margarine/buttery spread and was impressed with it overall just as a good butter substitute. It also had no trans-fatty acids and was non-hydrogenated. All good.

Lots of research has gone into some of these products. Click on the FAQ on their site index if you're curious.
