If you are looking for top of the range, it depends whether you building it yourself or ordering whole unit from dell?

Id say you could build something very decent yourself for about 800/900,

But add several hundred onto that for a similar spec machine already assembled by Dell

Are you talking decent respectable or gaming monster of a pc?

I always though my next computer would be custom built but I think i'll get the machine from hell off jes.de. Or at least the latest incarnation of the machine when i have the dosh.

    around 800

ill be selling my psp plus games and my old pc

Thinkin you could get a good system for that (without OC'ing?)- scanvage your old comp for parts if its an option and keep the price down. Just pick up a 2nd hand case and PSU and get a decent GFX and CPU and some good RAM. Loads of good deals at the mo ie 269 for an AGP 6800gt at JES. Should look around and check back with your shopping list.

secondhand is ur best bet... ie. mine :D:Dhttp://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=272776

Take the gfx card off(-€100) n get urself a 6800gt r similar n u'll have a fairly fast pc. Only thing is upgrading over time... AGP cards are getting scarce(ie. 7800gtx is said not to have an AGP model, mind u that card cost nearly what u have to spend)

Technology is changing quite fast, god knows where we'll be in two years. I figure my trusty P4 will keep me going till this time next year easily...

Blatant plug but i concur. What he says make sense would be a cracking rig for the money. Sh!te how come no one ever suggest stuff like this to me  spent a fortune on a rig simialr thats alrady outta date *double*:mad: (ah but theres always crossfire:p)

    Nukem

EDIT: Rosco just saw your post on the 6800gt at OCuk now thats keeping the price down

yea 800 wouldnt really get a machine that neednt upgrade for 2 years if its for gaming, since the games are looking for more and more power nowdays, I think anyway, I notice that from playin Prince Of Persia 2 Warrior Within for 10mintues on my P4 clocked at 4012MHz with 2Gigs 533 DDR2 and the 6800gt PCI-E at 440/1200 the system on watercool, and everything is nice and smooth, when playing on my A64 3200+ with a AGP 6800GT at stock speed still runing well but on the P4 3.4 with a FX5600 at stock speed it was a bit like slow motion, and that isnt suppose to be a power hungry game! or is it? been a bit out of date on games and spec for a while, too busy at work! but secondhand is a good idea!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

It depends on what settings ur playing the game at... Stick ur 6800gt into ur P4 with the FX5600 n im sure the game will run a hell of allot better. There's a big big difference between the two cards...

    is this a good pc

Abit IC7-G Replaced the NB cooler with a Microcool Northpole cooler, works fine with fan off, i only ever turned it on for overclocking...
Intel Prescot 3.2P4 w thermaltake copper heatsink
    1gig twinmos PC3200 ram
    9800pro W/Zalman Heatsink
    Segate 160GB sata HD
Antec Sonata case w silent Jeantech 420w PSU
    Dvd rom

    ?

will it run today and tomorrow games easy on high res

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭jozi

That 9800pro is getting old at this stage, you should be looking more at a 6600gt or up wards.
Tbh you should prob put agp based boards out of your head and get a pcie board. As mentiond above the new get of nvidia card is likelly not to be produced on agp platform.
Not sure with the mobo & cpu i have a amd and know nowt about intel cpu's.
    gig of ram is plenty.
will it run today and tomorrow games easy on high res
    Not at high res

I have almost the exact same setup except with an x800se. Runs all of todays games bar maybe BF2 at max everything. (BF2 almost there)

A friend has something similar to this, and the 9800pro is more then capable at playing all games currently out again, apart from maybe BF2, at very close to max res - ie still at very pretty visual quality

The sonata case is fantastic, however I don't know about the Jeantech psu if you're gonna be plugging in a 6800 at some stage.

    why do you think that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,662 ✭✭✭savemejebus

From what i've read the 6800 is a power hungry card, and, although I could be off the mark here, Jeantech don't seem to be the most well respected psu manufacturer. They are a bit above Qtec but nowhere near antec/fortron/tagan etc territory.

Having said that I had a 300w jeantech psu in a low power system and had no problems with it but when you're spending big money on parts and a gfx card you don't want to skimp on the one item that can turn all your hardware to smouldering plastic.

Also, when i was researching building a computer here last year I was advised first and foremost to get a really good case/psu and so I guess i'm mirroring the advice i've gotten here over the months.

    Yes, it is decent enough.

The 9800pro will need be replaced soon for new games if you want to run them at high resolution, but the processor and ram are fine. The ram can easily be upgraded in any case when required.

So I suppose the "weakness" is the gfx card....but overall a solid pc

so do people on boards think i can get a cheaper a better pc if i build it my self

This is only an example, but this is what you can roughly build for 800 Euro.

Gigabyte nforce 4 mobo (no sli) pci express etc... 103 euro
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307571&s=sc

amd 64 3000+ with heat sink 155.00 euro
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307201&s=sc

1 gig of twinmos bog ram cas2.5 107 euro
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=118498&s=sc

Antec sonata case + 380w quite power supply 119 euro
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=305069&s=sc

    club 3d 6600GT 184 euro
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=307935&s=sc

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=309415&s=sc
(an example pick what ever burner you want)

seagate 160 gig IDE 7200rpm harddrive 85.00 euro
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=121189&s=sc
(again an example of price, get what ever brand hardrive you want, would recommend you get an ide harddrive as they are easier to setup for newbies than sata, up to you though)

    Total 804 euro + shipping

All prices from komplett.ie as of 29th jun 2005.

You may also need an os: an EXTRA 85 euro on top for xp home on komplett.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=303203&cks=PRL

Overall atm amd 939 offers the best upgrade path. You can put in a dual core 939 cpu at a later date when they come down in price on almost any amd 939 motherboard as long as you update the bios.

You will also have pci express on the motherboard, no point getting agp now it's a dead format as far as most gfx card companies are concerned

Nvidia for example are claiming atm they will not release their 7800gtx in agp....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,662 ✭✭✭savemejebus

I've got an almost identical setup to that (cpu, ram, gfx, case) and am very happy with it. No probs playing games and it's a nice looking quiet system. Had no problems using a sata drive but i guess that depends on the mobo.

One thing that you could check out if you're in a hurry to get the stuff is the prices of equivalent stuff on www.pixmania.com. Their DHL delivery is only a couple of euros more than Kompletts GLS
