    I remember watching this show.

Rick Hunter was from the Macross Saga - and they were fighting against these gigantic aliens called the Zentraedi.

From a quick google search, I found episode synopsis on Macross Saga Final Episode Synopsis

I still don't understand the in-between hybrid mode or whatever they called it.

I have a vague recollection of playing a pen and paper rpg based on the series as well. (or maybe I'm just imagining this...)

I have the DVDs of all three Robotech arcs: Macross Saga, the Masters, and New Generation. In the end of 'Macross Saga' - after the earth is decimated - a number of pilots (including Rick Hunter) leap off into space to try and find a means to combat the proto-culture races. If you found proto-culture confusing then it's okay: the three series were entirely separate originally and the US writers just spun the whole proto-culture nonsense to try and force a link between them.

they were meant to be separate stories?

but isn't Dana from the Masters series a daughter of the two hotshots from Macross Saga, but was left on earth for some reason while they follow SDF-3?

Anyways, my issue with the whole mechs is the in-between mode ie the guardian mode. Why would they require this mode anyway? I don't recall seeing any episodes where this mode was actually useful.

My personal favourite would be the invid invasion, mainly because of the new tech they brought to the series. Time to lookup that site again.

Yup, seperate stories. Harmony Gold, in the US, bought three stories and joined them together using the "proto culture" storyline. Since it was being dubbed, it was easy to do.

As to Dana - you're right. Well remembered. However, this detail is only revealed through dialog. When you see Dana remembering her parents in "Dana's Story", it's merely Harmony Gold chopping in scenes from "Macross Saga". There was also "Robotech 2 - The Sentinels" where you do see baby Dana. That was the first 3 episodes of a planned spinoff series made originally by US Harmony Gold so it was able to more successfully link two stories that never originally had the links.

Yeah, it's pretty pointless isn't it: it's not a proper 'mech warrior, it's not a proper fighter. It's a stubby version of both and was never really useful (you'll notice these modes all differed between series because of the different storylines).

*Nods* It was the best in my head too. Loved the bikes at the time and still have the music in my head nearly two decades later. I also prefered the aliens here - the whole hive thing they had was very interesting.
