ID Card Printers

Hi All, I have a few questions about printers that print onto plastic cards. I haven't a clue about these, I have been looking around on the net and there's a load of them and very varying technologies.

Basically here's what I want to do: I want to be able to print some cards, preferably on a kind of sparkly silver card, with no raised text or anything, here's the first question, do these printers print this kind of silver finish, or is it the case of getting silver cards and then printing everything else on them?

There doesn't need to be a magnetic strip encoded with information, just the silver card, a photo and some details on it, apart from the picture the colours would be say black text and a red and white logo. Again, if I was to get silver cards, would the red and white or even the photo come out on them?

The specifications pages and details of many I've found on the net don't have these kind of details, and seeing as I wouldn't have a clue what kind of shop to look in around town (and plus the prices would prob be better online) I can't get a look at one first hand...

Any info from anyone who has worked with these would be appreciated, some of them are a bit expensive so I don't want to shell out for one that doesn't do what I'm looking for...

    Cheers.
