Problem connecting laptop to CRT monitor

I run a large CRT monitor through my laptop for picture editing.

It is connected at both ends using a cable with fourteen pins.

Yesterday, the monitor (but not the laptop) switched itself to standby mode for no apparent reason.

I checked the connections at both ends and found that, if I tweaked the one into the laptop, the CRT monitor came on again.

This suggests that the connection (socket in the laptop?) has become unstable. I can't understand why as I am anal about looking after it. I need it for work.

    1. Could it be that the cable has become faulty? Are the pins prone to going out of line?

    2. While I have no choice in the connection into the CRT monitor (there's only one socket) can I use any of the other sockets into the laptop, if I buy another cable?

    Many thanks.

    D.

    1. The pins are prone to bashing/forcing - just going out of line when already perfectly connected would be odd. How are you sure the CRT cable itself is fine? Did you connect it to another PC, to test is out?

    2. If you have an older laptop, you have only the one VGA output for a monitor - nothing else. If you have a pretty new laptop, with a decent graphics card in it, you may have a second DVI output as well. You can get a converter to adapt the DVI to VGA and use that with the monitor instead. Still, I'd suspect the cable or pins first, instead of the socket on the laptop...

    Thanks for the reply.

I went and bought another cable. No joy.

So, it's really starting to look like either the laptop socket (likely) or the monitor (unlikely. when I power it up, it immediately goes to standby)

    1. Any tests I can run before I give up and take it to the doctor?

    2. Any recommedations for repair shops in Dublin (Southside, please!)

    Thanks again.

Since it's at work that you're using it, can't you plug the monitor to another PC, just to definitely rule that out? It's better for you to take the lappy in for repairs knowing that that's the problem definitely, rather than going in "blind".

No advice on repairs I'm afraid (I fix everything I can myself) but I'd expect it to be expensive... If the lappy is still under warranty, make sure you take it to an authorized repair center - otherwise, you'll end up voiding it...

Glancing through this forum, noticed this thread:

Some people give suggestions on some stores that handle repairs (if you're out of warranty) on the thread - can't comment on any myself, but they may be helpful...
