My Dell 8400 has started recently acting like you have suddenly pulled out the power cord and the power switch starts flashing orange and you cannot turn it on/off without pulling the plug out for 10seconds+

    Any ideas?

    Sounds like overheating....

Funnily enough, look at the thread Mutant_Fruit just put up:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=271969

Some good tools there to stress test your PC - I've never had a DELL desktop but I've seen the 10+ seconds thing and having to unplug the power cord before... Clean out the fan/heatsink assembly from dust, leave the side cover off/open for awhile, see if it lasts longer before it shuts down.

    Check this out:

You should be able to find the fault. Try reseating all the components in the system.

    This sounds like my prob:
If the power light is blinking, the computer is receiving electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.

Ensure that the voltage selection switch is set to match the AC power at your location (if applicable).

Of corse it is or i have blown half the thing up

Ensure that the processor power cable is securely connected to the system board.

    I'll have a look

    Thanks for that dell
    Failing these any other ideas?

I have the pc pluged into one of those extention leads with 10 sockets could this be the prob? I've moved the pc to a socket on its own and hasnt failed in 15+ hours so ill see if it keeps going.

I've recently ordered one of these from the Dell outlet store so i did a bit of searching to see what i could find. Check this link from a pc forum, and you might be a little more informed, however judging by what these people have all done, i don't think you'll find an answer. BTW, how old is the machine?

    Machine was bought in december...

Called dell he took it back and replaced the motherboard & PSU (PSU was a revision A00 got a new revision A06)

Got the machine back last night and booted to blue screens

But it was just cos they change the raid settings.

this link indicated a prob with the old PSU's
