    Hey all,

Friend of mine was on to me this evening saying the fan on her PC (desktop) stays on even when PC is powered off. I'm thinking BIOS problem or faulty PSU? Anyone else got any ideas?

    Thanks
    R

I'm assuming killing the power to the entire thing works?

Does the on\off switch on the case \ PSU work in terms of turning it off? Or do you need to pull the plug, so to speak?

I'm going to guess the PC was in standby.

Maybe someone needs to explain to her the fan on her desk is NOT actually connected to her pc ;)

I am coming across a similar problem with my second PC. Its an AMD500 that I build myself a few years back. Basically whats happening is that when the PC is switched off, there is still power leaking (for want of a better word). It sounds like the PC is running but its not. Sometimes the power wavers, like it would in the event of some ESB power failures - cant be good for PC.

Is it a problem with the switch??

You know, I've heard talk of some fans and stuff that are actually designed to continue running for a few minutes after PCs go off to cool them down instead of just stopping...

And remember, thats not hard to believe considering that most computers just switch themselves off when given the /shutdown or old Windows->Shutdown command...

Again I'd suggest trying turning off all the power firstly from the PSU switch at the back of the PC and then from the wall, I'm gonna guess both actually work, in which case I'd start running some searches on your mobo, BIOS and fans to see if theres a known reason for it.

    Just my 2c.

As far as I know, (I haven't seen the PC), the fan still runs after PC is shutdown (not in standby). I'll be meeting her in the pub tonight so I'll get more info then.

If it is a Dell, there is a known problem where the PC wont fully go into S3 sleep mode, the fan will remain running. There is a fix available of this on the dell support forums. I've attached it for convenience

If its a Dell theres a know list of problems :P

Wheres the link btw? Just got a m8 with a Dell, well, he had it for 3 days but they are having to replace it after the engineer gave up trying to repair it on site... XP dieing on install after a new mobo and hd, rofl :P

PIV @ 3.0ghz with 2gb of ram? Kinda pointless imho, unless you don't really care about the money :D

well its not a dell. Told her to let it run for 10-15 mins after switching off to see if the fan turns off. Also to open case to see if its processor or PSU fan thats running... well let y'all know...
