Laptop : Dual boot xp and ubunto. Orinoco gold 802.11 a/b combo card (atheros chipset)
Router: Netopia 3347 currently supplied by eircom. Got it for 60 notes.

By the way, thats a kickass card you have there.

My summer project is to get myself a lappie and use mandrake9 (its an old laptop!) to wirelessly stream my internet and media files to it.

While on the topic, what would be the best brand to get? I picked up a D-Link DSL-G604T today in PC World. Wireless internet works fine on it, for my laptop (in OS X, haven't tried Linux yet). However, its settings page times out whenever I try to log in, so I'm basically using an unsecured wireless network. Not A Good Thing.

On top of that, Linux on my desktop chokes on it entirely, so I daisy chained it into my Netopia router to keep it happy. Won't be an option on my laptop, however, although I figure its just down to drivers.

Anyone have feedback for me on this matter? I'll have no problems returning the router and changing it for another, if it comes down to it.

I'm not familiar with D-Link gear, but in general, you should configure your router using a wired connection first, then go wireless. If it still times out that way, I'd bring it back. I use a 3Com access point, by the way - never given me any trouble.

How's your desktop connected - wired or wireless? Is it set up for DHCP or fixed IP?

If you're using ethernet, the only driver you need is the module for your NIC - as I'm sure you know, ethernet is something that Linux is very good at.
