Caravanning in Antrim/Marching season?

    Hi all,

Me and the girlfriend are thinking of borrowing a caravan off the parents and going up to Antrim for a week (cheap holiday). The only week I can go is the last week in July.

We've wanted to go there for some time to see Giants Causeway (her) and Bushmills distillery (me!) :D There's plenty to do and see and nice caravan sites apparently.

Anyway my question is, we're a bit nervous about "The marching season" and were wondering if it would be safe up there?

    Any comments or advice welcome.

    Hi Joto,

I'm not from Antrim (Armagh actually), but from my experience it can be hard to predict when/where a parade will be held, could be any day / evening of the week. The bigger ones are usually held on weekends, apart from the obvious 12th. This page should help point to dates and locations to be aware of:

    http://www.paradescommission.org/news/index.cfm

Just to educate you (if you need it), the parades are usually more of a traffic disruption than actual trouble. It's later on when the parade finishes that the trouble happens, involving the drunk hangers-on. Sure, watch the bands go by, but don't hang around, especially if you have much of a southern accent or southern-reg car.

    Mind yourself,

    B.

I went camping up that way a few weeks ago, tis a great place!!

Try the Sixmilewater caravan park in Antrim, on shores of Lough Neagh, was very nice (http://www.antrim.gov.uk/index.cfm?website_Key=27&Category_key=129&Page_Key=523)

Bushmills and the Causeway was really good too...

Met a friend of my girlfriends up there, she advised us to stay away during the marching season, she said most ppl head south just to get away from it... think its around July 12th or 14th... she could be exagerrating though...

    Hi Trotter,

I took a drive up there a few weeks ago myself. Did the flies on the banks of the Lough not drive you insane? I couldn't get out of the car for them!

The flies at the Lough were a right pain in the ass around the car park and edge of the lake but where we were pitched it was fine, luckily enough...

Went up to a place called Glenariff Forest Park the following night and we could barely put up the tent coz they were ALL OVER us, on our faces, up our noses, ears, everywhere!! Got a lend of some spray off a guy camping next to us and it worked a treat, didnt start kicking in for about an hour though!!
