Ok I want to buy a Mark 1 Escort, but this doesnt belong in the wanted forum as I won't be buying one for a while yet. Basically I'm just lookin for information as to where to buy one, how difficult they are to find etc.

I've been thinking about buying my first car for a while now and up until recently I was considering a golf. Then one day I saw a mk1 escort drive past and just thought it was the coolest thing ever. It wasn't exactly a vintage example as it had been fitted out with a modern interior, wheels etc which is exactly what I'd be looking for as it'd be used as an everyday car. Have i got a realistic chance of finding a car like this? If so, where and what kinda price range would I be looking at?

Escort Mk1's particularly 2 door cars are becoming very rare and highly prized nowdays !

It seems that in the 70's and 80's these cars were considered disposable and many of the 2 door cars were low spec basic 1100 L models which folk didn't consider worth saving, especially since the Mk2 was considered a much better, if essentially the same car ! I much prefer the Mk1 as do most folks nowdays, possibly because of memories of yesteryear and there period "coke bottle" styling !

Obviously the "Rally boys" took a lot of shells and destroyed them, then the more rare RS2000/Mexico/BDA cars are highly sought after.

You may find the odd 4 door around, maybe in the UK, but the days of finding a decent 2 door shell belong to a farmer who wants rid of it are long gone !

Try eBay and be careful !

check out classic events, like killarney historic rally and harvest stages in Donegal, sometimes see motors for sale there.

Also I've seen a lot of escorts(mk1 &2's) for sale, in the motorsport news, and rallynews papers.

    good luck

I see the phrase "my first car" in your post, be sure you can get it insured

Why, is it different to insuring a modern car?

To be honest insurance companies don't like old/classic cars to be used as an everyday car, also the car would be NCT exempt and they don't like that.

I've no problem insuring my Mk1 2.1, 19 --> Full license ---> 1 years no claims, fully comp & with open driving! And giving you a bit of advice, make sure it's a good solid shell, because there isn't much of them left in Ireland without paying outrages prices, but trust me it's worth it in the end!
