    Hello all...

last night after many valiant years of abuse..my disk drive started to give up. i rekon i have at most one or 2 cold boots and then she is off to the happy hunting grounds...i searched the threads here and what i found but if anyone has anyother suggestions ..can u let ke know before i start...prabably this weekend..

    1. i am going to use casper xp (unless u think its crap!)
    2. put a spare in
    3. copy the sucker
    4. replace as master..and hopefully carry on as before

    now for the questions...

    1. is there any software out there that is better, namely one that i can ask it to copy critical stuff (os etc..you know all the CD's you lost!)

    2. anyone got recommendations on drives now...its been a while since i bought one.

    thanks

why not use a free solution. Buy your new H/D and then use a bootable (live version) of linux to DD'copy the old HD do the new.

That should then get you booting on the new. You then may need to use something like FIPS or Partition Magic to twiddle your partition table (assuming the new hard disk is larger in size than the old).

I've done this in the past and it works perfect. From memory the dd command is:

    dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb cs=conv,noerror

This assumes that old disk is on IDE1 Primary and that new disk is on IDE2 slave.

    Hope this helps,
    Jab

    Why not use Norton ghost?

    Go for a seagate. :)

jabaroon..it is ide drives....jeeze id be half tempted. i know i would wind up cursing but if i got it to work...might be a cool way to get of the xp bandwagon...hmmm

deckie, i will check the price of the seagate but i am just reading what people posted some time ago and there 'appears' to be a lot of complaints about norton ghost...

never had a problem with ghost, and have been using it personally, and in an enterprise environment for 10 years now. works a treat if it's used properly (i.e. RTFM before using it).

I'd personally go for a Western Digital drive myself. nice and quiet and good reliability, although I've heard lots of good things about the samsung spinpoint drives just recently.
