    Hi,
Just wanted to know if anyone had/has any experience in Bujinkan in the Dublin Dojos?I am moving there soon and want to attend some classes, but don't know where to go as there are a few.I am a complete beginner.Any suggestions?

I think UCD has a club, but I wont be attending classes there, can you still go to the classes without being a UCD student?

I'm also interested in starting boxing.Good idea to do both?

    I can't believe I opened the can.

But seriously any views on it?

I said "interested in starting boxing" in my original post but thats not exactly correct as I trained for about 4 years when I was about 15.I'm 23 now and want to get back into it but at the same time want to start Bujinkan.

www.bujinkan.ie is down at the moment but should be back in a few weeks with all the info you need for Bujinkan clubs in Ireland.

I can't imagine Bujinkan UCD refusing you membership unless its got to do with needing to be a student at the college/insurance etc. I really don't know those guys so can't comment.

If you're stuck when you arrive, PM me and i can give you contact info of your nearest clubs. There's about 10 in Dublin and a good few of them are connected to each other with students cross training between them. The usual thing is to contact an instructor, watch a class and decide if its for you or not - I recomend checking out several clubs as every instructor has their own flavour. At the same time i recomend checking out other styles of MA too as the Bujninkan may not be what you want.

As for the boxing thing. Absolutely zero problem there and I'd say of all the Martial sports, boxing would be one that compliments Bujinkan more than other "martially" arts. Thats just my personal opinipn having had a Bujinkan teacher before with lots of boxing experience. Please remember though that Bujinkan is not a sport so there may be some conflict with mindsets, but if you got a good head on you you could easily partition the two.

    Best of luck.

Cross trained with the UCD club, can't say I was overly impressed with their training methodology, or the instructors mind set.

If you're around UCD you can train with UCDBJJ and the UCD boxing club. That'll make you pretty well rounded with respects to self defence, and also give you a good workout at the same time.

    Take Care,
    Colm

Skycat, if you go to www.bujinkanathlonedojo.org and click on links you will find listings of the other clubs around Ireland. I also enjoy training in the Bujinkan very much!

    Skycat,

since youve trained in boxing youve come from a combat sports background. The training method employed in boxing is to take a technique like the jab and train it with full resistance in a sparring setup. Bujinkan people do not train this way so it may go against what seems logical to you.

If you want to round out your standup grappling go for Olympic wrestling or Judo. If you want to round out your striking give muay thai or full contact kickboxing a bash. If you want to round out your ground grappling give Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Judo a bash. If you want to mix them all give MMA a bash.

    Hope that helps,

    Colum

    Skycat,
Here are some of the Dublin dojos that have websites (there are a couple more that don't). A lot of people who train in the Bujinkan have backgrounds in other arts and have found it interesting enough to stick at it for a long time. Also, I wouldn't worry about being a beginner - there aren't that many training who wouldn't consider themselves a beginner in one respect or another (there's a lifetimes worth to get your head around ;-)...
