RTE generally have comentarys and is hosted by Bryan Dobson. Leader's Questions.

TG4 orginally had coverage and from time to time have Public Account Committees .

    TG4 are independent to RTE.

However why both channel insist on showing Dail and Euronews at the same time is beyond me.

Its even worst when RTE put Euronews on Both Channels.

    RE: Euronews

Silliest of all is when RTE1 is carrying news in Gaelic and one switches to TG4 to find euronews in ENGLISH :D
    TG4 are independent to RTE
Do RTE not still own TG4 (and RnaG) ? There is a section in the broadcasting legislation wherby the Irish Govt can spin off TG4 into a seperate organisation but (unless its happened recently) this has never been implemented ?

Nice selection of smilies there Ulsterman :)

Yes, it is intended to break TG4 completely away from RTÉ eventually.
As it is TG4 are funded seperately to RTÉ via a direct grant from Government - something like €20/25 million or so. It is due to go up substantially though in the next few years.

RnaG is still very much so part of RTÉ - don't think there's any plans to seperate it...

Note that RTÉ didn't get to brand TG4 as RTETG4 which would prob end up being RTÉ THREE :D

    Its RTÉ RnaG now.

Never seen Euronews on TG4 during Nuacht RTE. Nuacht RTE is on at 5:20 on RTE ONE while Euronews is early morning TV on TG4 and Cula 4 is on up to 6.

They definitely used to do it (think it was later in the evening) back in the days when it was still TnaG

Im actually suprised they didnt think of it purely to annoy TV3. It wouldnt exactly be unprecedented Denmark has DR1 DR2 and TV2 while on the Radio there used to be a Radio 3 (in the Midlands) while RTE had "FM3" (the predecessor to Lyric FM)

As for Lyric why isint it still called RTE FM3 (or 3FM) and RnaG RTE 4FM I could never figure out why they called a Classical music station "LYRIC" when most classical music is instrumental (i.e. has no lyrics)

Is this before or after they start that DTT service ?

i remember when TG4 (or TnaG as it was back then) used to show Euronews at tea time. this was around 1997/1998

Yes the whole LyricFM naming thing was all over liveline and in letters to the Editor.

Did RNAG not share the same wavelenght as FM3 before Lyric?

I like the fact that RTE called each of their radio and tv stations differently.

I know RTE Network Two was daft and needed to relaunch as RTE TWO, I always liked the name Network 2.

But its daft on the radio now. RTE Radio One, RTE 2FM, RTE LyricFM, RTE RnaG.

Why not just go RTE 1,2,3,4?

Anyway would RTE RnaG not be RTE Radio 3?

I like that radio idea - simplicity is (nearly) always best! Though the Gaeilgoirí might have something to say about that were RnaG to be given the same treatment.
But certainly 2fm & Lyric could be changed without a hitch, and would make perfect sense.

RTÉ Two was also the logical move - they should've done it five years ago.
What was the reason for changing to 'Network' in the first place - where did they get the name from?
Though I must admit to liking it also; I still call it that, though am trying to change :) - especially as the only people who used to say 'RTÉ Two' were over the age of 85, or from the sticks :D

I think when RTE2 changed to Network 2 sometime around 1986/7 there were a lot of roumers at the time that if the plans for TV3 didnt work out that one of the RTE channels would be privatised

Never liked "Network 2" myself and I found the music they used to play before and after each adbreak (in the months after the namechange) rather irritating
especially as the only people who used to say 'RTÉ Two' were over the age of 85, or from the sticks

Surely peole over 85 would have called it "Telefis Two" or "TE2" ?

Most people over the age of 40 never stopped calling it RTE Two.

I think RTE should allow RTE TWO some indepence, maybe even as much independance as TG4.

I always like the Idea of Network 2 being the Channel 4 of Ireland.

I have to say the the current music and ident are very boring and unimagenative. GREEN who thought GREEN was a nice colour?

Look at the relaunch of Channel 4 brillant. Their Ident are the best at the moment IMO.

TG4's are still interesting but they only have about 4 different ones.

    Going OT with this...

But from a branding excercise, Network 2 when it launched in 1988 was hugely sucessful.

RTÉ 2 in 1988 was televisual carnage.

The old RTÉ 2 was a wasteland of Hallas and Batchelor cartoons and did nothing for about 6 years previous. RTÉ created Network 2 with the brief of moving all sport and kids/youth programmes and some films to the second channel, giving it a revamp, which had to include the name change, as then, RTÉ 2 was a by-word for shyte. Network 2 summed it up a vibrant name in the late eighties. (at the time, there was a youth programme on Channel 4 called Network 7 which had "street-cred".)

As for the logo, possibly the best RTÉ has ever come up with.

For Radio, no. They dont need to rebrand the stations. As for the idea of calling the radio stations RTE 1,2,3,4, thats way too confusing for the listener and viewer! Calling them RTE Radio 1, 2, 3, 4... for me there would be a bit of cross pollenation of what the BBC radio stations are called, and the way RTÉ would line them up wouldnt be the same as they are on the BBC; i.e BBC Radio 1 is not the same as RTÉ Radio 1, but you wouldnt rename RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ Radio 4.

Anyway would RTE RnaG not be RTE Radio 3
If you are going strictly by the order in which the stations started broadcasting RnaG (1972) would be radio two and 2FM (1979) Radio 3 but this is getting rather pedantic.
When the Beeb went over to "radio by numbers" in 1967 the Home service (oldest network) became Radio 4 and their newest network (originally to be called Radio 247*) came Radio 1

    * Thank gawd that never took off because imagine what a mouthful "Radio 97-100" or even "Radio 1053-1089-1107-1485"would have been

Still not convinced DMC I mean how many "relaunches" have BBC1 BBC2 ITV and even Channel 4 had down through the years yet they keep their original names

Personnaly I think RTE 2 had a bad name at the time. I.e. RTE was a bad brand.

Again I don't think RTE TWO is a good brand now. When Network Two Relaunched as N2 in the late 1990's it was good.

Network 2 was a good brand.

Remember 2FM was known as Radio 2.

I think C4 has the best relaunch not changing the name or the Iconic 4.

There where rumours that it would go.

    ?

definition of lyric... words to a popular song is only one of the meanings of the word. it's also the name of a number of theatres

expressing deep personal emotion; "the dancer's lyrical performance"

used of a singer or singing voice that is light in volume and modest in range; "a lyric soprano"

relating to or being musical drama; "the lyric stage"

the text of a popular song or musical-comedy number; "his compositions always started with the lyrics"; "he wrote both words and music"; "the song uses colloquial language"

    write lyrics for (a song)

a short poem of songlike quality

of or relating to a category of poetry that expresses emotion (often in a songlike way); "lyric poetry"

See above for RTÉ's standard responce to:-

Why is Lyric FM called Lyric FM when the majority of the compositions they broadcast are missing Lyrics?

    In other words

Look Up a Dictionary you ass. You want to be technical, we will give you technical.

You are looking back in historical terms, but at the time, which what I am remembering, in contemporary terms, it was the correct decision THEN to change the channel name.

RTÉ 2 was a weak brand then. ITV has had a number of identity crises over the years. And the BBC refresh the look of the channels every 5 years or so..

If you really cant remember how bad RTÉ 2 was in the 80's, or the political climate, then you are really not going to understand that rebrand.

Elmo, keep it nice..... be civil...

I completely agree about the Network relaunch, inventive and much needed.
But can't agree about the 'N2' change - how ridiculously vague and contrived was that?!
Neither the decent brand of Network or RTÉ!?!
And all the presenters referring to 'N2' all the time was pathetic - half the time people didn't know what they were talking about, and the other half probably didn't even hear the mention as all it is when pronounced is a mumble!

RTÉ Two is the best I think, and should be stuck with from now on.

Still think the radio stations could do with numbering - nothing confusing about RTÉ Radio 1,2,3 or 4. Just like the BBC - just toss in 'radio' and you're grand in distinguishing from television. Sure as it is Radio 1 is named as such!

Probably because it's a relatively low cost way of providing public service broadcasting.

what do you want - re-runs of american sit coms - it comes out of your license fee remember..

    or just a test card..

Well why not have the parliament stuff on one channel and and re-runs of American sitcoms on the other. Not that Im generally into American sitcoms myself but wouldnt it keep someone out there happy

I suppose in the interests of fairness and balance it should be pointed out that there was tennis coverage going out on both BBC1 and 2 for much of yesterday :(

And also that RTE don't hold the rights to the Tennis as TG4 have exclusive right in Ireland.
