Laptop won't shutdown

Anyone had problems getting their laptop to shut down when running on the battery? After about a half-hour of use mine just shows me the egg-timer when I click on "Turn Off". I have to hold down the power button to turn it off which I don't think is very good for the machine. I have Windows XP Home Edition on it.
