At work, somehow accidently set the display too high - now monitor just displays message saying out of range or something.

How do I start the pc in safe mode, or better still, just get it back to normal?

    Running winNT sp4. Thanks

Try pressing F8 when restarting for safe mode.

When on destop right click mouse button, goto properties, settings and slide res bar down a few notches.

Are you talking about resolution or refresh rate?

Doesn't matter - he could get the "out of range" message with either of the two being too high. I have an LCD at work that does this if the resolution is set to an unsupported configuration or the refresh rate deviates from the standard 60/75Hz.

Win NT - there's one I haven't heard of in awhile... Mad m's suggestion should work - tap F8 repeatedly when the PC is booting, you'll get the startup options, go to Safe Mode, it should default to 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 and you can then re-set it from Display Properties for when you boot into Windows normally. Refresh rate should default back to 60Hz when you use Safe Mode.

With NT there was no safe mode option, however there is a "vga mode" option that is presented on boot, just choose that instead of a normal boot. Then you can change the display settings and reboot as normal.
