Re-registering a car in your home county?

I was just thinking this evening how it would be nice to be able to re-register a used car in your home county.

I am currently seeking a car and in all likelyhood it will be from a county other than where I actually live.

While a car's condition is more important than it's reg, it would still be nice to have the option of changing the reg to my home county (plus it would be a good 'money spinner' for the govt!).

..........provided ofcourse that the cost was reasonable (i.e. no more than €100-€150)!

    Silvera.

You pay VRT to get the license plate so I'd guess that's how much you'd have to pay.

I'm sure (if they wanted to!) the govt could amend the relevant legislation (or introduce new legislation) to allow re-registering of vehicles without VRT being applied, e.g. "VRT would not apply when re-registering a vehicle within R.O.I" .

No can do - believe me I've an interest. I'm a Wexford man with two cars, both of which have KK regs, as did my previous car. And the one before that was Waterford. I really should pick my cars better...

im sure u did but the second and subsequent owners of everything from cars to houses to electronics always get the sh!t end of the stick. u have to compromise if u buy used and the reg plate is totally irrelevent. doesnt make a monkeys of a difference.

most used cars in this country are totally shagged and never even have oil changes. i would think ud do well to get a non molested car under budget never mind a stupid reg plate....
