Simply put, who is the best heavy metal band of all time?

Who has every ingrediant to make the ultimate sound of heavy metal?

In my opinion, the answer is Slayer. They have never sold out or gone soft but always stuck simply to heavy metal and everything that goes with it.

What do you guys think? Who is it in your opinions?

    There is no answer.

    I definitely wouldnt say Slayer.
But then i also agree with Karl.

Cos everyones answer would be different. For me itd either be Megadeth or Blind Guardian, but tonnes of other people would disagree (just like i did with you :D)

No, for you Slurms, the best band in the world is King Crimson. Do not argue.

Its a matter of opinion. I'd say dave mustaine, tbh, he contributed ALOT to the metal scene

Again, I'd agree with Karl and say there is no answer, though the ones I'd consider who stand head and shoulders above the rest are Black Sabbath. 35 years on and everybody is still ripping them off :)

Yeah, I would also say Black Sabbath because they invented the genre, and also Iron Maiden get Honourable Mention because they helped bring it to new places!

Either Slayer, Pantera, Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden

To put it simply they are all great.

lol when I saw the name of the thread I thought you were takign about the metal band "The Almighty"

Aren't they that band who dress up in battle armor and rip the piss outta gore/death metal bands while playing old skool 80's metal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭Pyr0

    I'd have to say Pantera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

im agreeing with karl on this one to say that there is no "best band" its all down to personal prefrence, although in my opinion i would have to say pantera, i can remember the first time i heard the riff for walk and just falling on the floor just begging to know what band it was.so simple yet so agressive ill never forget the first time i heard it.

id say the like of sabbath and zeppelin for putting the foundations down.

Slayer get a mention simply becuase they are in their 40's and as heavy as ever!

Pantera got pretty heavy with TGSTK, some angst packed in there alright!

    Anthrax!!!! yea go spandex!!!

Seriously I'd say Death or Opeth for the simple reason that both bands have released quite a few albums at this stage, none of which can be faulted, in my humble opinion. Perhaps they weren't as ground-breaking as Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden but I seem to have lost a lot of the interest I once had in bands like these.
But who knows, I might become an Adam Clayton fan next year... set up a shop or something

Let there be no more talk of manowar in this thread

    Manowar.

    Duh, like...

Hey man is that Patricide as in the Tralee metal band who plays covers, if it is I think i probably saw ye in the YK2 place............SEVERENCE RULE!! ;)

anyway back to the topic, I would defintly give it to Black Sabbath as they pretty much started the whole thing.

Led Zeppelin, King Crimson -> Black Sabbath -> AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead -> Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer -> Rage Against The Machine, System of a Down

covers most of my bases as well as a substantial proportion of the development of Metal

    i would say slayer.

If we're talking individual people who have contributed most to metal my votes would go to:
    Dave Mustaine
    Steve Harris
James Hetfield (despite my loathing for metallica, he has made metal popular)
    and......... maybe Scott Ian

I cannot disagree, Death and Opeth are quite possibly two of the best bands that have ever existed in my estimation, and both Chuck Schuldiner and Mikael Akerfeldt have been hugely influential on my playing.

Amazing bands, but I still stand by my "There is no best"

Well it is down to people's own opinions...

It's not like, pick the best band, full stop... Pick the best band in your opinion..

I would also like to say that Opeth are ****ing amazing...

Haven't heard much Death but what i've heard has been good! :D

yea that was us, played mostly origionals though i think(cant really remember), have to apologise for that gig though we played god awefull thats what happens when you give our singer yolks and when we had our old drummer, then when the moshpit got broken up i just stopped caring so i just started playing crap bass and because of all this our guitarists ****ed up.If we ever play there again well show ye all how well we can really play.yea severence are good but all i heard were covers, good fun in the pit broke my nose after 20 seconds whatever band does that are worth their salt.

now back to the topic dont forget bands like arch enemy and dimmu borgir or emperor they all kickass too

Late Motorhead without a doubt. Their early stuff was more punk than anything.

I couldn't pick one single band either, but you have to put Judas Priest's name into the mix.
