Which computer???

Apologies as this has probably been asked about a thousand times but after my last computer gave up the ghost I have to get a new one.

Am looking at the moment at one of the following four:
    - SUUNTO, VYPER
    - SUUNTO, MOSQUITO
    - SUUNTO, GEKKO
    - UWATEC, ALADIN PRIME

Looking to use it for general diving, nitrox soon. Not too sure how much further than that. Mixed gasses? Might do. Ability to conect to a laptop would be handy but not essential.

And something a bit more rugged than my last one would be great!!

    So any advice/comments??

    Cheers!

    Dude,

The points have kinda been covered before. I'm not very up on dive computers like suunto but here goes.

Its always a trade off between functionality and how many of your earth euro's you wanna part with.

I'm a cheapo, i dive with a Uwatec (sp??) DTimer and run a slate. But thats becase i didn't want to go about paying for a computer that does gas switches & handles deco in a reasonable form. Anyway almost all of the computers these days have so much CYA they are giving more and more deco for the same run times.

If you have may hundred eurons get the VR3. It comes highly reccomended.

There is a thread on YD here where the OP is asking exactly the same question.

Remember to consider that if you pay up 300/400 now for somewthing like a suunto it might become usless when you move onto trimix.

I'm a little confused why you haven't included the stinger on there...too pricey? Because personally out of all those you've got totally different functionality comparing the Gekko to the Vyper- with the vyper being the superior (IMO of course ;))

I personally have a stinger. Wouldnt change it for anything. But at the end of the day, we don't know what kind of diving you're going to be doing. So tell me, is it deep wrecks...shallow reefs...planning for nitrox/trimix etc.

Gotta help us before we help you:D

At the moment and for the next year or two it looks like I'll be recreational diving. Most of the dives that the club does on wrecks are less than 50m, and most weeks we are diving to 30m or less.

Stinger looks like a lovely piece of kit but at over 500 euronians it's a tough option. Looks like the zip on the dry suit might need to be replaced before the end of the season and the credit card is still bearing the brunt of the Red Sea trip.

Oh yeah, should have said that it has to be bought from scubastore.com as that's where the credit note is from.

Would love to get a VR3 but the wallet won't allow it. Then again a Ouroboros Rebreather would go down nice too!! Must have a word about a pay rise...

Hmmm....Just found out that I could get a VR3 for about €900. Soooooo tempted. I don't need to eat/drink/drive/pay rent for a couple of months? Right?

If you buy, make sure comp works in guage mode also ala Vytec. Comp wont get bent in this mode. Uwatec BT and a deco software program will cost you €200 MAX. Decoplanner on www.gue.com is $80 and is an excellent software. Dont forget your own computer between your ears :)

Damnit. The world want's me to get a VR3. Maybe I will. There's one on ebay for 640 at the mo. Auction ends tomorrow. Might fire in a bid for the craic.

A VR3 is a computer that you can pretty much hammer nails with and will more than likely not grow out of. From OC Air/Nitrox to CCR Trimix.

Very handy if you find yourself on a dive boat thats sinking due to nails coming out and its jepaordising your 150m ccr dive. Then you'll be paying any money for a vr3.

I'll be honest - in my 3ish years of diving I've never come across the dive boat/nail scenario. That being said it's not unlikely to happen. Maybe I DO need the VR3, if only for that reason.

Or would it be cheaper to add a hammer to my kit bag?

Really thinking of getting the VR3. For the extra 200ish it's pretty much future proof.

How the hell did I go from buying a €350ish computer to a €825 computer. And be happy about it? Sheesh, stop asking for advice on the hyperweb from people who won't be spending your money! :D

Considering the water temps of irish diving you could probably hammer those nails back in with your nipples. I'm getting a 2nd hand Sunto as a gift. Can't remember the model off hand but I'm getting a hold of it tonight so I'll let you know. Afaik it does Air and Nitrox but it's free so I don't care, I don't nitrox dive anyway.

    <edit>
    I think its a mosquito.

    Did you get the computer?

Not yet. Auction ends in a few hours. Somebody might be able to get me a new one for just slightly more expensive. So I might go for that. But after last night I might be making a large donation to a charitable organisation...more later when I get a chance!

If you started your own charity say.... The Charity of Bigfeller's Nipple... then you could donate to that charity and make it a tax deduction.

    Just a thought...

More on the new VR3 at low please....!!

Ordered VR3 today. Gulp!! €800. Bout as cheap as you can get it. The one on ebay sold for €755. For the extra the warranty is worth it.

Report next week when I get my grubby mits on it.

    Where'd you get it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 406 ✭✭bigfeller

A buddy of mine knows a guy who sells them. He's sent a few people there in the past so he gets a fairly good price.
