USB devices stopping post

I've been having some trouble booting lately, it seems to take about 10 minutes to get past the post screen. The PC just hangs at the detecting the CPU/RAM stage of post. Nothing works, not even the power button. Then I had a thought, remove the USB card reader and viola, it works.

Now I've checked with other USB devices, webcam and external DVD writer and they both cause it to hang if they are plugged in too. Checked this in all 8 USB sockets (4 on the mobo and 4 off headers) and it's the same for them all.

So, not being one to give up I disabled BIOS support for USB keyboard and mouse, I don't have a USB keyboard or mouse so it's not a problem. Now the devices don't cause it to hang.

My question, should having USB keyboard/mouse enabled in the BIOS have caused this? Is the bios getting confused and thinking that there is a keyboard/mouse plugged in when it's actually just another device?

All is well now but it'd be nice to know what the hell is going on. I've never seen this on any board before. Mobo is MSI K8N Neo Platinum, Skt 754.

Had this problem a few years back with another MSI board & a 750 zip disc. It was a bloody pain discovering what was the problem but once I did it never really bothered me, just dosconnected it.

My USB hard disks do this no matter what machine they are connected to.

I've seen this before on different motherboard combinations with any USB Mass Storage class device connected... Basically, the mobos always get stuck when detecting the IDE drives cause they mistakenly think the USB is one of them.

On some mobos, a BIOS update sorts it, on others, unplugging the device in question is the only solution.

However, this falls in line with what RicardoSmith seems to encounter...

I've never seen the USB keyboard/mouse legacy support affect the above issue... Trippy  .

My computer does this when an iPod is attached; I suspect it's a power draw issue.

I don't remember them acting up when they were connected through a hub.

Thanks for all the replys, nice to see it's not a one off anyway. Seems to be OK since I disabled USB support for mouse/keyboard so I think I'll leave it at that. Must keep an eye out for BIOS updates.

Yeah, I was about to post this. Happens me too - will POST but not get much farther with a Shuffle attached. Remove the Shuffle and power-cycle and everything goes as normal.
